    South Padre Islands guide reccomendations

Heading to South Padre Islands in mid January to get a break from Wisconsin winter and have never fished in salt water before. Anyone have recommendations of what species to target this time of year along with guide recommendations? Also any lodging suggestions? Would love to catch a redfish!

I’d change plans and head to Venice, they call it fisherman’s paradise for a reason. It’s not the most beautiful place in the world but we caught Bull Reds this week from 38-48 inches. Then you can go offshore and go tuna fishing.

Take a party boat out for red snapper. Murphy goes out of SPI, Osprey goes out of Port Mansfield. Check the wave forecast, do NOT go if 4' or more waves, peeps will be pukin.

Good man in a boat on the bay.

Captain Paco was great with my grandkids on the specs.
Very patient and another hard worker.

I liked both of these guides.
Had some others that not so much.
Won’t catch reds in the numbers like Venice.
But it will be a good day on the water.

    Good luck and enjoy!

Patriot Guide Service (Derick Kuyrkendall) out of Port O'Conner is highly recommended.

ended up going with Captain Joaquin Pena of Drift Water Charters. He is a great guy and a great guide! He used to be a hostage negotiator in Mexico City working for the US government so he had some great stories. We really enjoyed our trip and WOW are red fish delicious!
