Great eating! And a blast on ultra light gear. Go with 4# Berkeley XL,then go to 2# ! You'll be reaching for the net after you've lost a few. I don't believe in catching any fish on the beds.

I like bluegill better than crappie mainly because of the texture. Crappie taste very good but they are soft and mushy to me and bluegill are more firm and the meat flakes better. I have cooked them every way and that is my experience. I had rather catch large bluegill than crappie also.

I grew up on them! My grandparents would fill the freezer all summer long and then live off of them during the winter. If they weren't canning tomatoes, peaches and peppers during the summer they were bluegill fishing.

We have some goo bluegill and a few redear in the local community lakes, I do a gill fishing trip once or twice every spring, fillet and fry them and man are they good. I'll take them over walleye and crappie.

We’ll catch several throughout the year while crappie fishing. If they’re big enough I filet them also. Can’t tell the difference. They’re as good as crappie.

Bluegills are my favorite freshwater fish to eat. It is just hard finding them big enough to get a manageable filet and make it worth cleaning a batch of them. Better than crappie in every single way other than size.

Definitely better than crappie...about a tie between yellow perch and gills I think. They are both so good.

I agree with this. Cold water crappie the meat is more firm and flacky.

It’s tough to find bluegill big enough to eat around here anymore. They are my favorite fresh water fish to eat..

Trick to good blue gils is when you get the 1/2 pounder to hit the cricket you got to lay down in driver seat and hand line him in or your life is over all the while screamer oh my god .
