"I've got the boat, the rods and reels, the lures . . . now if I could only catch some fish."
Hackers are getting smarter. Had a card compromised but if not for a lucky gas charge, I would have not known for quite a while. Hackers went into my account and changed the billing address. It could have been a couple months before we realized we were not getting statements. Stopped on a trip to get gas and when the pump asked for my zip code, it got denied. Called the company and found out about the address change to a different zip code.
I swear my card gets compromised every 2 years. The first time it was an $8K+ Rolex somewhere in California via PayPal. Called Chase and PayPal and it was all set. Since then I've had an issue every couple years, typically smaller charges under $500 and sometimes just a monthly subscription to a TV service or similar. Chase has always taken care of it ASAP.
I hate thieves. I'm all in on executing career criminals (White or Blue Collar).
Most don't care about fraud because us, we, you the customer pays for it.
What's all that interest you pay go for? Part profit part fraud.
My Cap one card was hit for a $1200 charge a couple months ago for "Lodging" in AMSTERDAM at 5 AM my time - I got a text from them questioning the charge at that time.....took care of it quick. Hmmmm what is involved in "Lodging" in Amsterdam that cost 1200 bucks even?? SOMEONE here MUST know the answer to that!!
Every card I have is set up to notify me of any transaction over $1. Got a notification a few months ago that is was being used in Houston to order booze delivery. Called the CC company and they shut it down quickly. Charges were rolling in while I was on the phone. These scams cost all of us. I hate thieves.

The overwhelming majority of fraud losses are written off by the banks that are backing the credit cards but obviously it is still incredibly profitable for them when you factor in interchange fees (the piece of each transaction that goes to the bank) and interest income they receive. Occasionally the loss falls on the merchant if they did not follow proper procedures and the bank can prove it but most of the time it is just written off by the bank. Unless you are talking about taking down a major fraud ring, law enforcement rarely gets involved because the consumer and/or the merchant are rarely taking a loss. The way the rules are written by Visa, Mastercard, and other major card companies, they want the consumers to use the cards as much as possible and they want them to be convenient and for the consumer to have no liability. They also want the merchants to willingly accept their cards despite having to pay a percentage of each purchase back to the banks and the card companies.

I got a notification a couple weeks ago from CapOne about a charge to my card for $0.85. The charge went through, but they immediately locked my account and called me. Their fraud lady was awesome and told me it was likely someone "fishing" to see if the number worked in prep for a much larger charge. They took care of it and got me my 85 cents back. I've had really good luck with CapOne.

I just got hit last week on my Cabelas Black Card as well. Second time since Capital One took it over. Not happy about it. They did reimbursed all the charges while they investigate but thinking about dropping them.
Absolutely nothing is totally full proof anymore and anybody can get popped at any time.
"The man of system is apt to be very wise in his own conceit; and is often so enamored with the supposed beauty of his own ideal plan of government that he cannot suffer the smallest deviation from any part of it…He seems to imagine that he can arrange the different members of a great society with as much ease as the hand arranges the different pieces upon a chessboard.” Adam Smith, The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Every time I've been hit its always been a bunch of small purchases under 100$. Both of my cc companies notify me of anything over that or anything suspicious..
The cards I use in public have the notifications to ding my phone with a notice. HD dings before I make it to my vehicle. Ebay card does too which makes the GF ask what I bought it she's in the other room. Have to silence the phone before transaction now.
I had someone use my social security number to buy 2 verizon phones from one of their stores. They bought consecutive serial number phones. I had never done business with them so the first bill I received I never opened but threw it into my junk mail burn box. Second notice I opened and I was being threatened for collection. I went to a verizon store and had it verified. They gave me a number to call. I had to go to local police and file a report. Take it to be notarized and sent it back to Verizon. That was the last I heard of it. The bill was dropped from my name.
Someone started to hack my PayPal on eBay. I just happened to see items under recently viewed that I had zero interest in and put a freeze on my account. I changed my CC numbers. That put a stop to it.
