    Well I got hit finally

Opened up my CapOne app this morning to schedule a payment on my Cabela's card and my monthly charges I put on that card along with a couple of TW and Rapala orders totaling 600, turned into a 6400ish balance with a 5800 dollar charge at a store in Montana at 12:00:00 AM on Saturday. Pretty sure I was in bed sleeping at that point in time, and I for sure didn't make that transaction. I called their fraud department to notify them of the situation and they are taking care of it. There is a phone number to the store associated with the transaction, I almost feel like calling them from a phone other than mine and asking them what is up with that transaction. I was told by the rep on the phone that CapOne would investigate, but they will probably do like all of the other fraudulent charges and just waive it and be done. But its damn near $6000 bucks, that is serious money.

This was the first time I have been hit for a fraudulent charge. It was a big enough one that it wasn't going to sneak by like some of my friends who've been hit for a hundred here or there. They are issuing me a new card, but it just makes you feel abused.

Yes, very much so. Even stranger yet, I have notification for each transaction for that card set up on my phone, and I did not get a notification for that charge or I would have caught it while it was pending. Last used it last Thursday for a legitimate transaction.

I have mine set up for notifications for any transaction over $100. I usually get a notification before I leave the counter if at a store.

Same. I had someone in California charge $5000 dollars worth of tires and rims a couple of years ago and never got a call.

My credit card bought over $2300 of wigs in September while I was sitting in a boat on Newboro Lake in Ontario. But the credit card company did call me to ask if I truly was buying over $2300 worth of wigs. Of course the answer was no. But Humminbirds? That would be a possibility.

I have / had a Cabela's card for like 20 years and soon after they sold the portfolio to Capital One I had a minor issue that required a call to customer service. That experience was frustrating and left me scratching my head wondering where I would be if i needed CS for something important.

Long story short I left, they don't miss me but I feel better

Enable 2 step verification on any financial accounts, it is a little bit of a pain but adds an xtra layer of security for a "hacker" to deal with. Like anything it just makes your accounts tougher to get into than the next guys so they move on. Kinda like having a Smith and Wesson sign in your yard vs an anti-gun sign. Who is the criminal going to pick on.

Nothing will happen to anyone, my wife deals with this daily, trust me when I say no one will put in the effort to catch those that did it.

I have my alerts set to notify me via text of any transaction over $1. That way I can get a jump start any time an unauthorized transaction is initiated - probably a carry over from the 35+ years working in financial crime detection/prevention. My card has been compromised 3 or 4 times in the past 12 years. The first time was when I was going through a divorce and my ex had my credit card number memorized. I had a transaction show up from a website that was advertising Russian mail order brides. Believe me, at that point in time, getting rid of the wife I had was costing me so much that there was no way I was looking for another!

There IS a scam associated with many credit cards and such. You get an E-mail saying your large purchase is on the way and thank you, with a "click here" to refuse or to discuss the matter. You click here and enter your card number, secret code, name etc. and the thief is off to the races.

How many of you eat at restaurtants and give your credit card to the waitress? I never let mine out of my sight, plus the new cards can be read even if they are still in your wallet by a portable scanner.

Most of the time this type of fraud is committed using shell companies that process credit card numbers manually hence avoiding the typical electronic notifications. The credit card numbers come from the dark web where they are bought and sold on the regular. The hackers obtain you credit card numbers is various ways but usually it a compromised point of sale terminal or a data dump from a company who process the cards. Pretty much untraceable and until it get to be big bucks most people don't even notice.

The new thing is HSA cards, hardly anybody pays attention to them and if they do the billing is so confusing they wont even notice it.

Just had a failed attempt last month on my card. They attempted to charge $399 at a "dating and escort service" in Nevada. USAA locked the card and called me right away.
