Last weekend I fished the KBN State Team Qualifier at Keystone in OK. The fishing was challenging to say the least. The bigger issue was my trolling motor falling off in the water. Not sure if it was just a calmative of many hits or what, but while trying to get a bait unhung in the rocks, my trolling motor hit a rock and fell in the water. There is only one little 5/16 1.5" bolt that holds the motor to the mount and it sheared off. No, I was not going very fast. The co-angler even remarked about me not going very fast when it hit.
The motor was not in the water very long. I hit the power poles to stop me and with the help of the co-angler, we pulled it back aboard. Time in the water was under a minute I would say. Of course there was no way to fix on the water so after fishing in spots with the poles down, we called it quits at 11am or so.
Found a lumber yard in Mannford and used an easy out to get the remnants of the bolt out and remounted the motor to the mount with a new bolt. Went back to the lake for a test and it seemed to work, but was a little intermittent. Decided I need to open the head up and let it dry out because the wires might have gotten a little wet. I knew the head was probably not water proof for under the water, but we do fish in the rain so it had to be mostly water resistant.
After a few hours tested the motor on the land and it seems to work alright, so I thought it was good to go. Was I wrong!!! It had no power at all, was as if the batteries were completely wore done. I knew that was not the case because every now and then at first I would get a burst of full power. Had to quit on Sunday around noon with no trolling motor power.
Last night I was able to take the motor apart at the bottom and this is what came out.

I never dreamed in the short time it was in the water, this much could have got in. There was more on the front of the boat but I wiped it off before taking the picture.
Will try it out again once it airs out for a couple days.
