    Shimano Metanium issue

I have 2 Shimano Metaniums 6.2 that I use for lipless baits. When it's cold or raining/wet the bearings squeal on cast. Had reels cleaned this past spring and they were fine until now. Same thing happened last year. Do I need new bearings or upgraded bearings?

That’s most likely NOT a bearing issue. MET 13s?

I had the same issue with my Antares A. That brass race that the brakes ride on, wipe that down with a cloth, make sure there is no oil or water on it. I found that this was making my squeal noise.

If the above suggestion doesn't fix it, try removing the anti-reverse bearing sleeve and putting (1) drop of oil on it. Wipe it around with your finger before re-installing. I've had this happen a couple times on my E series and this did the trick. But the brake ring is a good place to start.

I always thought the brass race needed a drop of Shimano oil when the squeal starts. At least that was the case with my 13' Metaniums.

DO NOT oil AReverse ANYTIME! The anti reverse has nothing to do with casting. Your brake system is most likely dry and needs serviced, and or the bearing on the spool shaft may be dry. Dan

Sorry, but I missed the part about squealing on casting. I thought it was on the retrieve. I've heard the advice before about never oiling the anti-reverse, but have had several of my personal reels that, after a hard rain, will squeal on the retrieve. I got tired of replacing anti-reverse bearings to take care of the problem so one small drop of oil takes care of it. It is a metal on metal contact surface.

This is my understanding too. I don't like to talk on here about stuff I don't know about, but I have a buddy who is an "all things Shimano" expert and we had this conversation just the other day. He said there are instructions in the Metanium box that say to oil (very lightly) that brass drum often.

Interesting I'll have to check the box for instructions. Thanks for the info.

You are correct. Says to clean and oil the drum after every use. Did it today and will find out this weekend if the noise is gone.

Went fishing today and reel was quiet for a while and started making noise again. Wasn't as loud as before. May clean and lube again for next weekend.

Nevertheless anti reverses will fail when oiled. Not if, rather when? If you leave the AReverse assist in you will not notice it but still not a good idea. ARs should not squeak unless corroded, do as you may though. Dan

Yeah they can be finicky and the trick is in the lubricant and polish/cleaning. Dan

try oiling the brake shoe/tabs too, see if that helps a little.
