    Yamaha lower unit repair needed

I have a 05 Yamaha 60X 250 hpdi that needs someone that knows a lot about the lower unit and how to diagnose an issue

In the past 4 years I have had the lower unit seals replace 3 times just to find water in the unit at the end of the season

Clearly this is not just a simple issue with the seals some thing else is causing the seal to fail

Seems like the leak is at the prop shaft and yes I have replace the prop shaft as well

Looking for a reputable company or person in the metro Detroit area to do the repair

Do you mean Lake Drive Marine in Coldwater? They are a Yamaha dealer. I had them put a lower unit on my old boat. They do good work.

Van’s Sport Shop in Grand Rapids. Best I have ever seen. Lower Units are what they do.

I’m hoping to find someone on this side of the state

As for Vans I only found 4 reviews on a couple sites 3 Bad and 1 good and the 3 bad ones had a recurring theme to them

    But Thanks

You can buy a new one from a place in Florida for 950. Can't remember the name off hand but I can find out it you are interested. I have a friend that is about to order one. Some guys on here have bought from them and are happy.

I've been pricing a replacement and a new OEM Yamaha 60X-45300-10-NA lower unit costs $3,500

I would love to know more but am skeptical

Roy don't skimp on this, aftermarket lowers are notoriously prone to failure on 250hp motors. That's a great price for a OEM lower. Mercury torque masters are over 5k new.

Yea I assumed he was talking about either a refurbished or an aftermarket brand

    I’m not looking for that
As many miles and hours I run each year I want something that can stand up to the abuse

It is SEI. I know nothing about them but I have read some posts on here that the guys who have purchased from them like the experience. Naturally people are gonna be skeptical of a 950 price when yamaha wants 3500. I don't blame them. You might ask the guys who said to stay away from SEI if they have had a bad experience. Again I have not dealt with them but I wouldn't hesitate to check them out as most dealers charge 3 times as much just because they can. When I buy something I rely on reviews if I can find them. Their units are supposed to be new not refurbished. There are youtube videos on SEI you may get some info from.

I would take your prop off and check the runout on the shaft to see if there is a slight bend. You can tape a straight edge to your lower unit so it almost touches your prop shaft and spin it and check with feeler gauge to see if there is a difference in readings when you spin the shaft. That is the only thing I can thing of that would eat up your seals.

Some think insurance is warranty... Insurance covers theft and underwater impacts/collision.

Yea I would love to say I hit something but there isn't a scratch on the prop and only a small normal amount of paint wearing off the skeg

I've hit a couple things with other boats years ago and my insurance company is quick to send someone out to inspect the damage and clearly there is no damage on this one

I'm going to drop the LU in a couple weeks and go visit Dan's buddy

I'm also thinking over the winter I'll send the prop to Mark just to make sure its balanced and cupped correctly just to cover all the bases

I guess some think you can bend a prop shaft through a lack of maintenance…

And before you go there, I know he didn’t say the shaft is bent. That’s my bet though.
