Well just got back from dropping off the lower unit at Rose Marine
Very nice people talked to Billy and his mom and they were very attentive and asked all the right questions
Good to see a family operation these days

Ran in to Mark Modrak didn’t know he worked there

The amazing thing was, as I was coming in the door after dropping it off (45 min) Candy (Billy’s mom) calls to tell me that they had done a pressure test already and confirmed it was leaking out the shaft seal AGAIN but they also noticed it was leaking out the shifter seal as well – not sure the other guys ever even noticed that

I gave them my ok to tear it apart and see what’s going on hopefully this will be a better experience

Most overlook this. Merc offers a better seal. I wonder if Yamaha does?

I see a bushing and seal
    I noticed they say

"This bushing stops leaking shift shaft bushings when trailering after running hard."

Curious what running hard has to do with shifting and trailering?

Did a quick search and didn’t see anything for Yamaha shifter seal
I did find Hydro Tech makes a Heavy Duty Propshaft and bearing housing

That makes the Yamaha have a "Fat shaft" like Merc racing motors. More durable and can run higher on the transom without breaking the weak 3/4 in shaft.

I can't say enough about Candy and Rose marine

They got back to me today to say they found that the Shift Shaft has a notch in it and that is why the seal is failing and thus why the prop shaft seal fails

    But there is a problem

The part is not in stock in every place they looked and Yamaha Japan has no ETA on when they will be shipping any

I called a buddy at boats.net and he says the same thing so I called as many local marinas and dealers I could and no one has it

I can only find it online in 2 places and both have some very bad reviews

So if you know someone or are some one that works in a Yamaha dealership I'm looking for the following part

    Shift Cam Assembly # 60X-44150-00-00

    Thank You

Sei Florida, 3 year no ? Asked warranty.
    Or what I’d do.
Go Johnson motor forum, and look or ask about gearcaseman on here, he’s the best ship it to him in Tennessee, and he will ship it back fixed. The best. That’s what he does for a living or he used to , took a job helping his father in law or something, but still does some lower unit work.

Turns out you can actually get some good stuff from eBay

I bought a used shift cam assembly from a seller on eBay sense there isn’t a new one anywhere on the North American continent

Took it up to Rose Marine the other day and Candy says she will have the guys look it over and let me know

Got a call yesterday and looking at the caller ID and seeing their name I assumed they were calling to let me know it wasn’t going to work but Candy was happy to inform me that not only will it work but that the lower unit is done and I can pick it up at my convenience

Just got back a few minutes ago and I can say I am a happy camper

Not only did they do the work quickly they took the time to walk me through installing the LU seeing that it’s my first time (Pretty straight forward) but most people wouldn’t bother they would just say here you go and leave me to figure it out on my own

They also told me it might be a good idea to replace the thrush washer and rather than try and sell me one they gave me the part number and said I’m sure you can find one for a better price

    Class act!

The newer 2 piece thrust washer is better, But I never had a problem with the regular thrust washer wearing. I always keep the prop nut torqued to specs.
