1997 Mercury Offshore 200 hp reverse issues

Shifting motor into reverse to back away from dock, the shift is not smooth. I would describe it as a little grinding/clunking going into reverse.

Shift into forward is very smooth. Holeshot is outstanding. Motor runs outstanding on plane and and has excellent acceleration getting to WOT. I'm very impressed, except for reverse.

What are potential causes of this?

Lower unit oil is brand new, changed by me before running.

Thanks for any direction. Picture shows VIN.
