    Networking for dummies(me)

New boat rigged by dealer. 93SV at console and 106sv at bow. Network cord attached where it should be. I have gone to settings/communication and I only see that unit at each one. Help?

What are you trying to see?? If NMEA network then yes you can see all NMEA sensors connected, but for ethernet, there is no list to look at.

    What network is it??

Under Settings if you look under the Device List you should see all connected devices. I think the Device List also shows the software version of each one. Make sure the software is current on both units. It does on GPSMAP units. Then if you still have problems, it's probably the cable.

To see all your ethernet devices, you go to Settings, Communications, Marine Network.

Did that. Only the one device shows.

On both devices, select Nav Info>Manage Data>User Data Sharing
Dont know if this will bring up list but User Data Sharing has to be on to share waypoints.

You may have done this but you haven't said you have. Post#6. Check and post the software version on each unit separately. Do you have a home network cable long enough to use in place of the Garmin cable. I don't recommend that for marine use, but it will do fine for testing.

On my post above, i stand corrected......i thought it was just the NMEA list that showed everything, didn't realize there was an ethernet list also.....

Sorry to confuse PMantle and anyone else that read this post.

Still haven't figured this out. So, if I want to test to see if I have a bad cable, can I use just any ethernet cable? We probably have some laying around the office.

Tried an office cable. Those "click" in. Worked immediately. Retried my Garmin cable. No go. Is user error common on these or can I just assume the cable is bad?

I was playing with some configuration changes today. To make it easy, I just ran a home ethernet cable from a 942xs to the GMS10 box. Box would not come on. Went back into the garage and dug out a Garmin ethernet cable. Came on just fine. There are times that a standard ethernet cable may work for you, but it will not in every situation, unless the RJ45 connectors have the metal shield ground.

Would it be possible to pull the new one in with the old one? Just a thought.

That's my plan though I have very limited experience doing such. Does the large round screw on cover deals come off?
