    Heat and Cool garage question

New house under construction. Sure would like to be able to enjoy piddling around in the garage when it is hot or cold outside. Garage will be 30' x 36' with side door and three garage doors.

Any advice on what system or systems to install? Not needing to cool/heat to house comfort temps, but something to take the edge off either hot/cold weather.

Say keeping it under 5k or so. Not sure if that is realistic.

A good mini split unit and a propane heater to help quickly knock off the chill for winter projects

After 3 quotes for $4800+ for a Mini Split for my 30X30, I purchased a Mr. Cool Mini Split from Costco for $1300 delivered. Now 3 years old and it has been flawless! Super easy install, very efficient and keeps it cool in the summer and warm in the winter!

sometimes you can do a conventional system in new construction cheaper than a mini split but you'll have ducting in your attic in your way if that bothers you any.

Heat pump mini split is what I would install. You can use a propane heater if it's real cold.

I use a 2 ton mini split system with a pellet stove as supplement heat as needed. Size you mini splits accordingly to the footage of your area you want heated/cooled and it will serve you well.
Ther area lots of units out there but I’ve been running 2 Daikin units in my shop and they work great. Consistent temps year around.

Mr Cool from what I’ve read, no personal experience. When our Ptac units go out at work I’ll be lobbying for Mr Cools

When i had my 30x30 double insulated steel building with 15 ft ceilings built. I knew and planned on a heat pump. 6 months after completion of build i got very lucky on a free 3 yr old 3.5 ton heat pump. Basically got in it for the cost of duct work. Keep in mind in the summer i keep it on 85 and in the winter i keep it on 55. When i decide to piddle in the shop i plan ahead. Bump the temp gauge up or down 2 degees at a time untill desired temp is acceptable. The unit does a great job and really the expense is not bad. I do run a barrel fan some to aid with air circulation when needed

Me personally mini split it would be. I hope to outfit my entire house with them in the near future.

Yupp spend most of the money on mini split. Then supplement the heat side with a portable propane or 220-240 electric heater if you think the smell or open flame of propane will be problem. If you have natural gas you could spend a little extra on the supplemental heat and get a overhead unit heater from Modine or Mr heater.

24' X 36' X 10' Did the mr cool mini set for 82 in the summer on 24 - 7 turn it down a little if I'm going to be in there a while. No real change in the bill. Will heat pretty good I'm told just installed early spring but did hang an electric forced air for winter back up on the really cold nights.

I have a 3 car+boat deep (45') that we ac/heat. It's at our AZ house. We have a 3 ton split unit on it. set to 80 in the summer, and 68 in the winter. I can drop it to low 70's if I want while I'm there in summer.

If I was doing new constructions I would do multi head mini split.... Insulate it heavily.

I built 3 garages, put a mini split in all three. Heats and cools fantastic. Latest garage is 32x36, 12 foot ceilings. No issues but yes, heavy insulation and insulated garage door.

Maybe but they seem noisy most of the time. Can't hear my split run inside or out but it is pretty new at this point.
