Bergara 14 series, i think they start out at about $650 and go up from there, good rifles for the money.

Bergara or a Savage would be my choices right now. I was always a Remington fan but they are not the same any more.

Here is a great video on Bergara barrels.

For the money you can't beat a Savage.

I agree. A Savage Axis II is a lot of gun for the money and quite accurate.

A Tikka TX3 is another but costs more and still a good deal.

The Ruger American is another very good rifle for the price.

What’s your budget? You can get a decent rifle for around $300-400. Ruger, Savage, Winchester, etc. I recently sold a Ruger American Predator that would put factory Hornady ammo into 5/8” 100 yard groups all day long. Lots of good options these days.

If you're looking to keep it as inexpensive as possible, and/or you like treating your rifle like a tool instead of art ...... Ruger American ......... I prefer the American Predator for just a few more dollars. I've seen American Predators that will almost keep up with RPR's (Ruger Precision Rifles) when comparing 5@100.

Ruger American or Savage are hard to beat. You can put a trigger spring in the Ruger for around $12 (MCarbo) and make a damn fine shooter. TC Compass too is a good budget rifle. I put did a trigger job on my TC and it shoots really good for a sub $400 rifle.

Be sure to get a reasonably quality optic. Even a good shooting rifle may seem to shoot subpar with a poor quality scope.

I have always found secondhand rifles to be the best buy. You can get a good deal on rifles that are much higher quality than the budget rifles that are being made now.

Pretty much nobody except for elite target shooters shoot out their rifle barrels.

I'd look for something like a used Rem M700, Ruger M77/Hawkeye, Tikka, etc. Even though it's fun to go buy a new weapon, I don't like the fit and feel of today's entry level rifles. I admit they shoot well and do what they're supposed to do but they aren't for me. The one exception would be getting a synthetic model for foul weather use

I already have a fantastic optic, just looking for something to mount it on and want to keep it under $700.

Ruger American is a great rifle for the price. If you want to spend a little more you can step up to a Tikka or a Bergara for just a few hundred more. I’m eyeballing one of the Bergara rifles for my next one.

How about the Kimber 84M Hunter? Anyone used this? Just a bit more for one in the caliber I want.

Kimber makes an excellent rifle, I have 2 of them and they are very accurate out to 600 yards (my range only goes to 600 so that is my experience). The Kimber 84M would make a fantastic choice. I find my .308 likes Hornady ammunition in 165 grain.
