Is an oil.change pump really needed on a SHO 250?

About to change the oil in my 250 SHO. Some videos say to use an oil change pump. Is just draining the oil from motor not sufficient?

You don't need the pump. Just pull the midsection cover off and take out the drain plug. I rig up a funnel to not make a mess. You can get a decent amount extra out by trimming up and down a few times.

Not needed IMO but oh what a convenience.

See for yourself. Start a timer to see how long each procedure takes you.

With the extraction pump the oil can be removed in less time than it takes to remove a side panel.

No worry about losing the side panel fasteners or stripping the oil drain plug upon re-installation.

Having done it both ways I am somewhat biased.

All of the 12V 60-80W pumps on Amazon have such mixed ratings that it's hard to choose one.

My first SHO change I drained the oil, thinking it might get any leftover manufacturing metal filings out. It wasn't hard, but like YAM911 says you have to be careful with fasteners and drain plug, etc.. Now I pump it out...It's much quicker and very easy. I just use a cheap small hand pump and is no problem even with the oil cold.

It probably works better than you think. But I use it for my lawn more and pressure washer. I have never tried to do a Yamaha outboard. I’m sure they make bigger ones

I'm sure it works great, just doesn't seem like it has much volume to me and you'd have at least 30 pumps if you could pull a pint each stroke. Not knocking it, just an observation.

I once used a drill motor rotary pump. From Home Depot. It was quick. Oil out in no time at all.

I used to use a pump but tried it by taking off the mid section this past time. I will not be using a pump anymore. Way too easy to just pull the mid section and drain it at the plug than worry about dealing with a pump and the hoses involved with the pump from dripping oil all over the place.

I have a west marine pump and man is that nice - super easy and no mess. A lot of shops use them too even if they pull the midsection just to avoid a mess.

Has anyone used a pump and then pulled the plug to see what was left over?

I just did this on my 225, after pulling oil out with pump and tilting motor back and forth a couple times about 1/4-1/2 quart came out of drain plug. If I was not changing the filter and original oil in motor I may have not pulled the plug but glad I did in this case.

So like 5% oil left over sucking out dipstick. Not a big deal in my opinion vs the ease of dipstick procedure.
