Money aside, Merc 300r or 300 proxs-both 4 strokes. Which one and why?

Obviously this would be for a bass boat rated for a 300 and I know the 300r is more expensive and it might take a year to even locate one, but...

Has there been enough experience out there with both engines on bass boats to get a feel for each engines pros and cons, particularly on 1700-2100 lb hulls?

If the boat is going to go over 85mph the "r". If under 83 it's the base model and there is only a ego driven issue between 83 and 85.

Well I'm not asking about an Allison or Bullet type boat, more in the Triton, Caymus, Ranger 21' type hulls.

And we know that guys with bassboats don't have any ego...

Ego has nothing to do with it.. You asked.. It's not always about the weight. Hull design has a lot to do with it. If the hull won't free up you've wasted some money.
There are a few 21'hulls besides allison and bullet that the 300R can be used to it's potential-- but the 3 you named would not.

So there is no reason to run a "r" motor with those hulls.

the r motor comes with lower unit options that will keep a boat going good into the 100's of mph, but that same lower unit uses much more power to get through the water until about 85 mph. That is why this is a hinderance to boat that will not exceed 85mph. They will literally be 3-6 mph slower just from the lower unit.

now a torque master is better till 85 mph because it lifts the hull more.

the r motor has oil coolers, not really needed on a bass boat, and any other change in the r over the pro xs is the same "just not needed on a bass boat"

I said ego, and only in this capacity is what I meant " my boat will go faster so I need the sport master lower" even though that boat won't do it. That's what I meant by ego

Also that letter R, is going to way more than double the price of a platinum plan if you are into extended service plans.

It is a decision that depends on the goals you have.

Thanks guys. I think you have answered what I was wanting to know.

Dont have a lightweight hull designed for 90+. Do have one that might push low 80's. Matching wallet to ego may keep me in a 250 though when it comes time to repower but thought I'd ask. Excellent answers.

I would like to see a comparison between a 300 ProXS and 300R with a Torque Master on the same boat like you mentioned. I have a 300R on a 1750lb hull and I don't think the ProXS would perform nearly as well.

So aren’t they both 300hp? What’s the difference?

Oil cooler, lower motor mounts, ecm flash for more rpms and different air intake/cam for more rpm, lower unit options. Price tag and price of extended service contract. There are definitely boats and goals that are better achieved with an R motor. But those same guys probably only have 6 rods 3 3700's and a 24v trolling motor.

Two dozen rods --- about 30 3700's-- more soft baits than you can haul--52" 36 volt Ultrex-- Mega 360-15" Solix's

Actual HP is different based on what I've seen. ProXS is right at 300 and R closer to 330.

I am getting a Caymas 21CX and it will have a 300R with a 1.75 Torque master, not sure why anyone would say this boat would not perform with a 300R.

Too heavy and wrong hull for an "R" motor.

It will perform great, will it perform 3500$ better ? That for you to decide is all

I had a Triton 21 X2 with a 300xs on it several years ago, it was an 81 mph boat, that boat was big, never messed with props or plates, it ran that from the get go.
