Type of sealant to use for under rub rail

Looking for recommendations for the type of sealant to use under the rub rail. I was thinking 3M 4200 as the 5200 appears to be more of a permanent bond. Reason I am asking is the boat is almost 30 years old and it looks like the seal has been broken/cracked and I am taking on water from there (sealant is still very well bonded to the gel coat but has separated completely from the underside of the rub rail.

In addition to type of sealant what would be the best way to remove what is left of the original sealant? I want to get it as clean as possible before applying anything.

    Thanks in advance
