    Ranger r71 speed

98 ranger r71 with 98 mercury 115. I’m running a laser 2 22p and a 6 inch Jack plate and I can only get 42-43 mph gps max. Runs 4800-4900 rpm. What can I do to get more speed or is that it?

I had a 115 on a 96 Champ 171 (about the same size boat) and would get like 45 gps at 5000. If I remember 5200 was max rpms on that motor. You could fiddle with it a little bit I'm sure but you're probably not going to gain much.

Sounds about right for that boat with a 115 HP Mercury. I wouldn’t waste much time or money trying to squeeze an MPH or two more.

Maybe raise your JP up for a few more rpm's. That should give you a mph or two. Keep an eye on water press.

42-43 seems low - rpms could be 400 higher, but, that alone would only be 1-2mph.
    I had a '97 r70 with merc 115 2+2 - ran 48-50 gps
Still have the r70, now with ProXS 115, still runs 48-50 gps.

Although the boat weight, prop condition, prop to pad, etc. are standard issues,
is it possible your gps is in error?

Don't give up yet - Good Luck!

I would be very happy with 48 mph. But I checked with 2 different gps’s and both read the same. Prop is pretty good shape it was freshly rebuilt this year but it got into some sand. I’ve raised the Jack plate and rpms didn’t seem to change but it did slow me down.

    Figured, but .......
    Hole shot good?
    Speed drop after prop rebuilt?
Any other changes besides prop rebuild - added talons, extra wgt. in back?
New acquisition or 'sudden' change in performance?
Shots in the dark to hopefully provide a 'spark' for you.

RPMs are too low, also get rid of the laser 2 because I have found it to be a terrible prop even after having it worked and cup added to it twice. An out of the box Powertech PTR3 is cheaper and performs better than my worked Laser 2. I believe your 115 has a 2.07 gear ratio so I would try a 21" pitch Powertech PTR3 or NRS3.
