What are the 4 holes on the front of the gear case? Additional water intakes? When running the engine with hose hook up water comes out of them.

I duct tape the nose cone holes so the water from the ears stays in the cooling system. Don likes to use a tank filled with water

I think this is the best solution but requires a good sized tank.

I run my 3 hole like this with no overheat issues. 5/8" commercial hose off full pressure well water.
It fully cycles thru the thermostat opening process.

Duct tape works... just be careful not to forget to remove it (and be careful not to peel the paint off the gearcase when removing it).

I use 2 prices of thin rubber hose and plug the holes when flushing, just pull them out when finished and I’m in salt water 95% of the time
