I think I know the answer.......

But I'll ask anyway. Do cotter pins need to be stainless steel?

Many have been brass, and other materials, for years. Depends on application.

In this case, I'm talking about the cotter pin that holds my prop on.

Does it hold the thrust, or does it go through the nut and shaft to keep the nut from coming off. If it is to keep the nut from coming off, stainless or brass will work. If it's a very small motor similar to the ones made 50+ years ago, where the pin carries the load, stainless or stronger.

It goes through the nut and shaft to keep the nut from coming off. I'd be concerned using brass knowing how "soft" it is.
