If you have a nose cone with low water pick up, correct prop and correct motor height 85-90 would not be out of the question. Stock lower unit, subtract 10 MPH.
That is a 17VEE and I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND you do not put a big block OMC on the back. A 19vee would be ok, but a 17 would be too risky to try it on.
If it is a 17, then what Chad said.
Ok, I have not picked the boat up yet, (bought it sight unseen) so could be a 17vee. Is the 225 ho to heavy for the hull/transom? Or is it too much horsepower for the hull? From what I understand a 225 ho makes 247 hp @ the prop stock. Boat currently has a 175 evinrude that is knocking.
It could be a 17vee. (Bought it sight unseen, have not picked it up yet) Is the 225 ho too heavy for the hull/transom? Or too much horsepower (247 @ the prop I believe) ? Thanks for everyone's opinions, and advice. Much appreciated! Hull weight 790 lbs, outboard weight 450 lbs I think?
Guarantees a 17vee, it’s more the weight of the engine than the power. Repower with a Merc 2.5 200 and have a fast little fishing boat
Chad, This boat came from Morristown, TN area. Maybe you have seen it? What about a 225 Mercury Promax, or Mariner Super Magnum? 240 or so prop HP I think, 375 lbs. Is the 17vee capable of 85-90 mph, or is the hull to small to handle those speeds? Thanks in advance
Oh, it's capable. But the driver, well......
Something in the range you are talking about would work. Motors in the mid 300 pound rangre, 200-225 horsepower should be a fast boat for sure. I would want a low water pickup regardless. The above with low water pick up would easy be at least a mid 80's boat. Would be a heck of a toy!
It will handle the promax fine but that boat takes a lot of seat time to learn it. I mean ALOT. I had one with a Xr2 for a while. Wasn’t super fast but it demands your full attention
Yes it will.
I am going to look at what I think is an early 90's mariner 200 horse, with a low water pickup. Can someone explain how low water pickup works, and increases top speed? I have researched, still do not understand the concept.
Simple, it allows you to run the motor much higher. In a low water pick up, the cooling water pickup is typically on the bottom of the gear case toward the front. Where as normal pickup is on the side causing the lower unit to have to be much lower in the water. The deeper in the water the more drag you have. To get an idea how much drag, stick your hand up to your wrist in the water at 60 MPH or so. A stock lower unit might have the center line of the prop shaft 3 inches below the pad. With low water pick up 1-2 inches above the pad is common. Obviously you will need to have a prop designed to be a surfacing prop, like a Bravo.
Does the Mariner Happen to be owned by a guy named Greg?
No, I found it on Marketplace
