    need recommendations from you guys

    Hey gang,

well, it happened today. was running back to the ramp at about 63mph and 5200 rpm when the motor just slowed down and stalled, tried to crank it and it sounded really strange. decided to troll back to the ramp and head home.

when I got the boat loaded there was tons of 2 stroke oil dripping out of the cowling. upon inspection, found a pretty large hole in the block right behind the oil tank, what was left of the rod cut the back of the tank open which is where all the oil came from. I had no indication of any issues before it let go, no overheat alarms, water temp was right where it usually is during the summer months, RPM was lower than it usually runs.

i've got a 2000 Mercury 225 EFI (OT014603) and need to get a reman'd power head---can you guys give me some of your thoughts on who is the best and has the best warrantee?

looking for personal or very close experiences.

    thanks,

Chris Carson does great work. It’s easy to research and find great reviews on BBC. Would not recommend Black Bird. <EDIT>
    My vote is Chris Carson.

Perry- something else to think about:

It's quite likely that a reman powerhead will far exceed the value of the engine when you are done. That may be ok with you, but it is something to think seriously about.

There are a fair number of Optimax engines in the marketplace due to folks repowering... so that's something to think about seriously.

Don and everyone, thanks for the input and yes, I have considered repowering, I'd love to have a 250 for the boat but I have real concerns about buying a used motor because of the uncertainty of it. I know it can be inspected but you just never know. then having to update the ancillary equipment to support a newer motor really runs the price up some.

it's a tough decision for sure, A LOT of things to think about.

I'd dump the EFI and go Optimax and not look back!

I would have no fear of buying a well cared for used engine checked out by a master certified Mercury tech.

I'm with the OP. I'd rather have a gas guzzler EFI over any Opti. To each their own... And I have the upmost respect for Don, Savage and Joe!!
