Tweak me please Ranger 198VX prop, jack plate, both?

All my testing is with full live wells 2 passengers and mostly full-3/4 tank. Speeds by GPS.

    2008 Range 198VX
    Evinrude 200 HO
Slidemaster 10" Jackplate 3.5" Pad To Prop

25P Raker HO 1/4 closed on all vents: Top end 63.3 @ 5800RPM Hole shot is sluggish and there is a definitive break over. While getting on plane, if I trim up a little it blows out just before it hooks up.

26P Raker 2 PVS all open (this is what came on the boat): with the same Pad to Prop that ran out 68.3 @ 5400 RPM That hole shot was a little slower than above (obviously)

24P Raxor XL 4 blade. Holes hot was nuts but I could not get full throttle before redline. I ran 60.4 @ 5800 but still had throttle left.

If I can find a setup that has a good hole shot but still runs 65 @5400-5800rpm I will be a happy man. I have tinkered with Jackplate height a little @3" I get a huge rooster and some blow out when the boat "breaks over". 3.25" the rooster was still above the cowling but the blow out was less. Thus far 3.5" seems to be the sweet spot. I am sure different props will run different JP settings differently.

O yeah I don't have cash to start buying props and plates. I got a kid on the way! I hope to employ the buy and try method with props. I can re-sell the the losers, but the Jack Plate is stayin.

If it runs 68 with the 26" Raker 2 loaded ready to fish that's what I'd run. There is something wrong with the 25 that a good prop guy should be able to fix since you should be getting 68 with it and 70 with the 26 but it's a little off too but not nearly as bad as the 25. Did you try raising the motor 1/4" running the 26?

I am nearly certain I raised it up with the 26 on. The holes shot is just too slow. The 25p is a slight improvement. With just me and empty live wells its gets up well. But load it up and its slow. Maybe that's just the best I get?

You can have the 25 worked so you get better hole shot and speed with more rpm's but the way it is now it's slipping about 18% so it's got something wrong with it. The 25 could have better hole shot by opening the vents one at a time but the slow speed and the blow out shows that it needs work. It's your choice get it fixed or run the 26

Thanks. Sounds like I need to talk to a prop guy. Mark Croxton seems to be the guy. I’ll get in touch with him next week.

    Rick,
Did you try posting this on the Ranger forum? since there may be someone there with same set up who has done all the trial and error you are going through.
Now, as for a wheel guy Mark Croxton is as good as they come, and I have had him do several props for me with excellent results.

Croxton rework the 24 to 24.5 and add a touch more cup for lift. I am seeing 67-68 in my 12 Z519 with 225 proxs.

If Mark works the 24 to 24.5 he going to be adding cup to the prop so you don't need extra cup and it going to cost $200+ to ship and have Mark work that prop so if you don't have any money that's something to think about.

The 26p is in need of repair anyway so I will get it worked on. (partly why I bought the 25p). This thing runs pretty darn good but I just can't seem to leave well enough alone lol. I bumped the engine up .25" and found 66.7 with me, nearly full gas, and live wells filled up. Its a little sluggish getting on plane.

I am sure this would run 70 with the 26p at this engine height but the time to plane would be way to slow for my taste. I would rather be on plane FAST and run 65mph than plane out slow and run 70mph.

I can easily see 70 plus with my 25 Tempest. The bow rides high and she is very light in the tail but she runs. I ran a 27 Tempest on my 07 Stratos 201 with Etec HO 225 for 74 mph. A 25/26 tempest is worth a try. Rakers are speed props and typically deliver when the bow rides high but are slow getting you there and thats where the hyd. Jack helps. If you are not getting enough bow lift than the props need to be reworked. The 24 Razor will get you to your 65 easy but it sounds like a pitch too light and none will deliver plowing water. Bow lift is the key to speed and without it you will never see 70. The question is…how does she feel in the seat? If the prop cup is biting you will feel it lift at 60. The bow will break loose enough for the steering to get light and responsive. Then its just a matter of time and distance to build the speed. Being stuck at 62 and low RPM screams no cup and pushing water. How many ports open on the Razor? I am running 1 plug, all the rest open. Hole shot and mid range screams but lost a mph off top end pulling the other plugs. The extra cup delivers the light and responsive 3 blade feel at top end without sacrificing the hole shot.

I really appreciate the advise. I have been so darn locked up with work that the small amounts of free times are taken up by chores and maybe a couple hours of fishing... I think next week I will have a little more time to mess with this. I will report back!

Get 26" prop repaired. Raise the motor to 3 1/4" ptp. Part of your hole shot issue is the 10" plate, increased water drag.
