    Coast Guard Rating

So I recently noticed that the coast guard plate on my 1880 says 150 hp. I'm fully aware that vexus rates them for 135, and most come with a 115, which is what I have. Just looking for some clarification on why there is a discrepancy between the coast guard plate and vexus rating.

If that is what you have they installed the wrong one. Now you can trade the 115 in for the 150

If you go by the actual Coast Guard ratings using the formula in the regulations 150 hp is well within the limit.

It's just very strange to me. Again not looking to repower. Just couldn't help but wonder if it was a mistake or not. Man I bet with a 150 you could be doing 60 tournament loaded easy.

There is no reason they shouldn't put a 150 hp on it, I bet they would sell more. I looked at an 1880 on the show room and it seems like too much boat for a 115.

I love mine and bought it knowing I would only be able to do 45-50 depending on the load. But it is a big boat and similar sized glass boats are typically rated at 175. So yes I agree with you, and I know this is an old topic I'm not looking to rehash but I still haven't seen a solid answer for why they didn't go like 150, 200, 250 on the avx to compete more closely with xpress.

My question is: for you who have the 1880 and have gone 50 mph or so, would you really want to go 60 mph with that hull. I am not sure I want to do 60 in mine. 50 can get a little squirrely feeling and very light. Maybe I am just old.

An 1880 would literally fly with a 150. Ive caught a few wakes just right with my 1880 and have gotten alot more air time than I was comfortable with. More speed could be a recipe for disaster.

if they wanted bigger motors on the they would have rated them for more there is a lot of difference in power from 115 to 150 .

They de-rate the max HP to make guys want to buy the next model up for more money. Every mfg does this. You can't tell me 1 foot of extra length equates to that much more hp

It seems like the vector force transom design has a negative effect on the computation. It is not a continuous beam transom. Therefore Vexus may have to use a continuous beam measurement in the rear quarter length which may be narrower than their advertised "overall beam width"

    TITLE 33--NAVIGATION AND NAVIGABLE WATERS

CHAPTER I--COAST GUARD, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (CONTINUED)

PART 183--BOATS AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT--Table of Contents

    Subpart D--Safe Powering

    Sec. 183.53 Horsepower capacity.

The maximum horsepower capacity marked on a boat must not exceed the
horsepower capacity determined by the computation method discussed in
paragraph (a) of this section, or for certain qualifying boats, the
performance test method discussed in paragraph (b) of this section.
    (a) The maximum horsepower capacity must be computed as follows:
    (1) Compute a factor by multiplying the boat length in feet by the
maximum transom width in feet excluding handles and other similar
fittings, attachments, and extensions. If the boat does not have a full
transom, the transom width is the broadest beam in the aftermost quarter
    length of the boat.
    (2) Locate horsepower capacity corresponding to the factor in Table
    183.53.
    (3) For a boat with a factor over 52.5, if the horsepower capacity
calculated in Table 183.53 is not an exact multiple of 5, it may be
raised to the next exact multiple of 5.

I think it has to do with the beam.

    Avid 19 XB
    18' 7" @ 97" beam. Rated for 150

    Tracker 195 TXW
    18' 7" @ 97" beam. Rated for 150

    Vexus 1880
18' 10" @ 95" beam. Rated for 135. Well at least I assume it's still that high. On the site, it only says 115.

So maybe if it was an inch or 2 wider, it could have gotten the 150 rating.

If you go by the formula both come out to more than 150 hp.

I would leave it how it is incase you decide to upgrade to a 150hp later.
