    NFC Xray 7108

Ordered and received two of these blanks and just looking for feedback/impressions of best applications. Was thinking of trimming it down and making a football jig rod, primarily 1/2 jigs for offshore.

Well they work for flipping, pitching and 3/4 ounce carolina rigging, what do you think? It is after all your build, lots of info on the internet I bet.

Question is mainly just for stimulating discussion from those who have built on the blank and may have found it to excel things they hadn't planned on it for. I have things in mind and didn't order the blanks without good reason. Newish to the game like hearing from other builders with experience. I've done a few google searches and have found some feedback.

I recently built a MB 7109 (HM) and it’s a beast of a stick. I built it for flipping heavy cover and was pleasantly surprised how sensitive it is for a heavy high power blank. I added some weight to balance better for a rod high presentation. I’m sure the 7108 X-ray is a great blank also. No problem setting the hook and pulling some good bass out of flooded green cover. Caught some good ones with 1 ounce tungsten and Beaver style bait. I think you will like it and the 7108 will be better suited for what you want to do with it.

For me, the 7108 is for frogs, a-rigs, and larger whopper plopper.
What guides are you going to put on your blank?

I've got one that I built, I built it to be my football head rod but it's pretty versatile. It's one of the rods I usually bring when I fish out of my team partner's boat just because I can use it for a number of techniques...football, crig, jigs, trigs, 5+" swimbaits, frogs etc. I've even done some light punching with it. I left it at full length.

I've been using fuji k-frames for my builds.. will probably stick with those in SiC.

I also have the IM and Delta 708 blanks. Will probably turn the Delta 708 into a frog rod.

When I first handled the blank that's what I was thinking... really nice tip section, somewhat soft, but loads of backbone. Seems very versatile. I'll probably take it down to 7-4 which is about as long as I like a casting rod.

What's crazy is it's the only xray that is still discounted.

I am in the same boat as you. I purchased the 7108 for FB jigs and CR (3/4-1 oz plus trailer) to fish here in Texas. I plan to cut it down to 7'8" to match my Dobyns 784 which I really like but it is little too soft for anything over 1/2 oz plus trailer. I am leaning towards a full cork handle to help get the bait out there but I can't decide.

I use this one as my primary pitching, flipping, and punching rod. Primarily 3/4-1 oz weight + hook and bait, or 1 oz jigs but have gone as low as 1/2 and as high as 1 1/2. Love it for that, but agree that it's super versatile, especially if you cut it down a bit.

Easy to balance, too. It's built with carbon fiber grips, the reel is a Tatula Type R. Not bad for a 7'10" stick!

How does the 7108 compare power wise to a nrx894 when cut to about the same length?

Wish I could say for certain, but I think it has a softer tip and possibly as much power as the 894. But the 7109 is probably closer to the 894 in power. I also think the action is different. the 7109 is mod-fast. I've only handled an 894 a time or two.

My self I would extend a blank for length, this preserves both power and action. Cutting a blank loses both.
