I have a 8” hydraulic plate and adjust ptp depending on load and conditions. I run a 27 A45 tempest in cooler weather and 25 A45 Tempest that Mark has worked in warmer weather. You will see a lot of 25 and 26 tempest on 196’s and a few 27’s. Most of the ones with 8” plates run around 2.5 below and run low 70’s.

I've had an 04 and an 05. I added 2" spacers on both to the 6" jp and ran a worked 25p tempest plus starting at 2 1/4 ptp and worked up to 1 3/4". Best speed on one trip to lake havasu in cooler spring temps was 73.5 and a handful to drive.
Normally at 1500' elevation it was 70-71. Summer temps with a load and 3300' elevation I had to use a 23p prop to get up on plane and 63mph. 3 guys and their stuff vs 1.

I also added 2" spacers, no need to replace the 6" plate. Picked up 2 - 3 MPH because it lessened the chine walk and made it easier to get to WOT with full trim.

If you change it an 8" is all you need and it sounds like it needs a good tune up.

Here's mine: 2005, 200 Opti, 6in plate, 26 Tempest. Started at 3" ptp and moved it up in 1/4" increments until it ran like it is now. I had a 25 Tempest and thought it was a better fishing prop, especially when you have someone with you, all their stuff and the livewells full of fish.

I have a 2004 TR196 with 200 Opti, 26 pitch Tempest. I just recently added a Bob's 8" Action Jack plate and had it on the lake for the first time this past weekend after installing the jack plate. I still think I have something not quite right with my setup. When watching the above video and seeing the extent of the chine compared to mine, there is no comparison. Once my boat hits 62 or 63, the chine get's 10 times worse than what you see in the above video. I have not had allot of time to play around with different PTP height adjustments yet so maybe I will find a sweet spot that will help the boat run more in control. Best top speed I have been able to get so far is 67 MPH and that's with a considerable effort to prevent chine.

Mine will walk away from you if don't watch it.
So here's how I learned to drive mine. I filled the gas tank up and went to the lower part of Lake Cumberland, there's an open section that's probably five miles long by one mile wide. I got the boat on plane, trimmed it up and started to accelerate. Somewhere in the 50's the boat would start to walk. When it would start walking I would start a slight left turn until the boat stopped walking, then I would straighten the boat and repeat the process. I did this until I could drive the boat straight down the lake at that speed, then I started increasing the speed. I did this process until I could drive the boat at WOT with little chine.

Sounds like the engine needs raised. I ended up at 1.75" ptp with a 25 tempest plus. Helped the top speed and for sure helped with the CW.

I had a 2004 196 with a 3.0l efi with a 27 fury at 2.5 inches below the pad it would run 74.6 with just me loaded to fish full gas and full live wells, two people both weighing 220lb-230lb it would run 71-73 summer or winter
