    "Get Home" aluminum prop?

Do any of you keep an aluminum prop/hub as your "get home" prop?

    I have a fury 4 25 and a fury 3 25 that I want to move out - seems the Croxton-worked Fury 3 24 is a better fit.

With that said, in lieu of keeping a fury that I'll never really run, is there a reason not to keep - say - a Solas Amita3 as a get home prop?

Why aluminum? I don't think aluminum and 20+ pitch go well with more than 150 hp.

^^ that would be my concern - just don't want $500+ riding around in a compartment forever if I don't need it.

Then don't carry one, if you damage your current one you can probably high idle home or the lower unit is toast anyway. Just buy a used prop from near the bottom of the threads main page. Also about 15 down is a section where props is the topic and the prop geniuses hang out there.

I carry a Mercury Emergency Propeller. Light weight and does not bang around.

I carry an extra prop for a couple of reasons.

    1- Spare prop if needed

2- Change according to seasons and water temp to keep RPMS at the upper range.

I carry my older stainless prop as a backup in my bass rig and an old, beat up aluminum prop in my tin rig. The one in my bass rig is not in bad shape and will run fine-the newer prop just handles/runs better. The aluminum in my tin rig is pretty rough but will get me home.

My main prop is a fury, my spare is a tempest. After I hit something with the fury I can use the tempest for a few weeks while the fury gets repaired. So it's more than just a "get home" prop. It's a temporary replacement and provides adequate performance.

Nothing at all wrong with an aluminum spare. I carried one for several years and it did get me back twice. The performance is not nearly the same but it will get you moving.

I agree 100% just keep the boat and prop in the water. And you will be fine to get home.

You can get a brand new Solas pretty reasonable. At least you could before the pandemic. I got 1 for less than $300 and it works great.

Yes...in my bay boat I carry an aluminum prop as a spare. Just something to get back in if I spin a hub or break a blade.

Yes....a Turning Point....All 3 of my props are TP aluminum props....I'd rather trash a prop than a lower unit.

I slung a blade early in the season on a fury 4. Didn’t have a spare and took TM to go 2 miles to ramp into 20 mph winds. No dealers had what I needed in a tempest, fury 3, or fury 4. So to fish the rest of the week I bought a 23p Blackman aluminum 3 blade. It cost me 200 bucks, kept me fishing, got boat on plane easily, but not much lift. Ran that prop for 2 weeks waiting on new stainless. Worked fine for getting from A to B and get out to fish.

I am thinking of getting a TP SS of the same design as one of my aluminum versions for a direct comparison. Settle things in my own mind once and for all.

Yup, well I have 125hp with an aluminum prop, nice to use a aluminum since it has a little give vs the stainless

I carry an aluminum prop w/ hub as my on-board spare. I keep my ‘off season SS prop in my garage.

I run a composite Pirana with replaceable blades ! I only have a 150 hp e-rude ! Not sure how far up in hp they go, but I only paid $175 bucks for with 4 spare blades ! You bugger 1 you just get to shore or a shallow spot, tilt motor, pull the cotter pin pull the back hub, pull the broken blade, put the new one in, and put it back together ! Takes about 10 minutes ! I like it better than the s.s. because it is lite weight, hp goes to getting the boat moving, not turning a 5-10 lb prop, and you can carry a set, or two of different pitch blades !
