    Surge brakes

Do all surge brakes surge, lol. I put a new actuator on mine to improve that and it still surges like crazy

There’s always some motion, but if it’s bad with a new actuator you probably have worn pins or loose connections in the hitch or tongue.

Yup actually have a new hitch and a new b&w three ball. Just haven’t installed yet. Used a vacuum bleeder on unit, actually pulled a quart through it....

You sure it's the trailer not the truck? You may have a warped rotor or drum on the tow vehicle and weak brakes on the trailer.

Yup, brakes all redone, I have to be very gentle when applying brakes, a sudden stop causes. Have a new hitch and 2.5 inch B&W to install, should help maybe?

Does anyone experience same with these when working properly, seems it might just be slack on old hitch on truck....

It’s doing something while stopping? A single jerk or on and off?

That’s not normal. The shock in the actuator is supposed to smooth that out. My guess would be the actuator is binding in the tongue, though slop in the joints might still be the cause.

I think some of my clunking is due to the slop in the 2.5in drop hitch.

There is no movement in my trailer at the hitch at all. Can't tell it's back there, stopping or starting.

Well I am going to install new hitch on truck and new B&W 2.5 inch shaft. I think that will improve weirdness, if still issue, I am getting a pressure bleeder, I used a vacuum bleeder this go around. Will also install new calipers and rotors, won’t be anything left huh

There is lots of play in a B&W. Not saying its a bad hitch cause i use one too but any time you have multiple pins or joints it gives room to wiggle. The more pins the more wiggle. Standard hitch has 1 pin. B&W has at least 4. Maybe a 1/8 inch play in a standard hitch. Prob a good 1/2" all around in a B&W. Its not bad but on bridges and fast stops or starts you get a good clunk

I'd say it's the Hitch and Receiver. Shake the hitch and see if there is a lot of movement. A little is normal. There are Hitch stabilizers and tighteners that can help.

Process of elimination is in order.

In 45 years I have never seen a stabber/hitch that didn't have some slop in it. In order to quite everything possible back there I suggest slabilizing the hitch 1st. This also keeps your pin(s) holes from wear. Having been thru multiple configurations of these "stabilizers" this is the one I found that works best and doesn't loosen up. I've towed the Z21 Intracoastal Ranger from Erie to Okeechobee multiple times and it's never loosened up.

*For the best performance, ensure the stabber (insert) is pushed fully to the left when tightening. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. If you distort the clamp you went to far.

I replaced my actuator and bled the brakes and still get what I consider excessive slam when even slowly pulling away from a stop. I also have a hitch clamp making the hitch itself solid as a rock. Must be the nature of the beast.
