    Question New bass boat motor

My husband is retiring after 42 years with the RR and he has mentioned that he would like a new motor for his 2006 Ranger VX bass boat. I’m thinking of making that happen since it will beat the cost of a new Ranger! My question is what cost range would I be looking at for a fancy Yamaha 250 outboard? Oh and can you trade in an old motor? There’s nothing wrong with the 2006 Yamaha 250 he has now....I just happen to agree that he deserves an upgrade. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

***Edited**** I was wrong about the type of motor my husband currently has on his Ranger Bass Boat and the replacement he would like to have. The motor he currently has is a 2006 200 Mercury. The new motor he would like to have is Mercury Marine Pro XS 250 Four Stroke.

***And for those interested....the name iranoff is a play on my first and last name....that’s it..nothing clever.

****Thanks for the wife of the year compliments *****

To the OP, how did you get your handle, "I ran off"
As noted above, a new Yamaha SHO is $20,000, more or less.
The motor you have now, may be worth $5000.
If the boat is clean, it's worth $25,000-$28,000.
    A new 520C is $75,000-$80,000.

And yes... wife of the year.

Good luck finding a new SHO...even if you get promised one when dealers are allowed to order on July 1st...you probably won't see it until 2022

Call Jaco marine in Tenn. I don't think anyone will beat their price on Mercury.

Try to buy from the dealer he uses regularly and trusts if you can. Nothing worse than having to drive hundreds of miles for service just to save a few hundred dollars.

Wow how cool are you ...
Call down to Airport Marine, 205-664-0407, they are located in Alabaster Alabama. Ask for Jim Hicks, tell him what you need. Jim is a great guy to work with, he's been in boat sales since the 80's. They are a Mercury and Ranger Dealer ......

Great gesture, but just give him your blessing and work together. Too many variables to know if you will get exactly what he wants.

Now, on the other hand, if you are actually posting to get info on what he would actually spend vs what he has been telling you, than I’m not throwing him under the bus.

I’m from Cullman! Was there yesterday. You got a sister?

If he currently has a 200 hp it may be the max his boat is rated for.

I'm going to assume that you're not going to do the motor swap yourself. This means that you will need to find a local Mercury mechanic to do it for you. I suggest you find the mechanic now and he can give you a total price that includes the motor, rigging, and labor. He will also have insight into your local market and might be able to help with the sale of your current motor. Also, availability is a concern right now. You might have to wait several months for the motor to come in.

Be sure what the max HP rating is for that boat. He may want a 250 but the boat may max out at 200 hp.
