    185 vs 379

I've been spending way too much time working on my son in laws 93 Javelin 379 and not enough time fishing from my Startos 185. So went fishing yesterday

I really like the 379, fun to drive, jumps up on plane in a heartbeat. The Faststrike 150 with the worked Ryker ll and 6" jackplate has plenty of get up and go.
My 185 has more deck space and I really enjoy the boat. I used to think it came up on plane really fast, but no comparison to the 379. The Yamaha VMax runs great with the worked Tempest Plus. I know my PtP is too low (4.5") but I would have to move the motor up to the last mounting holes.
So I'm guessing you know where this post is going.

6" or 8" jack plate??? Brand? I'm assuming manual not hydraulic
And NO I told you so's

Yep, appears that I would have plenty of room on the rigging and hydraulic hoses

Six inch slidemaster would be my recommendation.

If i wasn't buying a used plate i'd go with either a new Vance 6 or 8", but i'd go 8 personally because they are smoother handling all the way around. No launching onto pad feeling & no dropping off of plane & catching water while coming off of plane. Really either are fine, but i would rather have an 8" personally, but most do 6" since they're pretty common & quite a bit cheaper in most cases. Probably none or a very minute difference in speed too.

I would, but I don't have one... yet. My 17yo Detwiler is still working, Exact dial and all. Every time I threaten to get rid of it, it starts working again.

I am leaning towards A 6" Vance per Les's recommendation. Hydraulic is just not in my budget and the Vance looks like a good solid unit. The JPL4500 sells for $220 plus the $15 install kit. Shipping runs about 35 bucks. So all in all very affordable . I can slide that much under the radar from the wife. She is still pretty hot about the amount I spent on the kids Javelin

Manual will work just fine for a set-and-forget application.

6 inch is good. As said above. Start at 3.50 below . Your son and law my want to be looking for another prop, as the Raker 2 is a good prop but has soft metal . And bend easy . The Ranker is a good prop but getting hard to find . A Tempest plus is very close to it .

Ok, with new 6" jackplate set at 3 1/2" PtP. Holeshot improved from 5 seconds to 3 seconds. Old PTP was 4 1/4".
At 4000rpm I'm running 46mph. 5000rpm is 55mph. 5500rpm is was at 61mph,all gps. Too much wind and chop for me to get to wot

    Without jackplate at 4000rpm was at 40mph (now 46), 5000rpm was at 50mph(now 55) and 5500 was at 58mph(now 61).
Water pressure has dropped to 12 lbs at any rpm after holeshot. Think I'll go to 3 3/4" PtP and see what changes.
    All in all

Good results Coach. Keep playing with it, adjusting in those 1/4" increments. You'll find that sweet spot soon enough.

May need to drop it a little because if i'm not mistaken 18 minimium on the water pressure is what you want. Championman can tell you for sure though. .

Les, yes I agree at dropping it some. I was at 15lbs with PtP of 4 1/4". I am going to drop the motor 1/4" and see what changes. I have read (somewhere?) that yamaha 2 strokes have a minimum of 11lbs but not sure where I read that. I'll PM Champ and ask
