At my installers the other day and he had an G 8612, L 12" Live, S 12 and H 12 laying on the bench. I was surprised not by the weight of the HB products but how light the two others were in comparison. I know from experience that in the electronics business lighter normally equals better quality if you are looking at long term reliability. That seems counterintuitive but in my testing and product deployment it holds true. Before all the "fan boys" jump my carcass "quality" is a generic term here. HB may have the same quality BUT be more worried about the "bottom line" which would explain the slightly heavier units.

Talk about worrying about nothing ..... SMH
Not so fast. If you have ever designed something to a spec where g-force matters weight is a big deal. The bow of a boat in rough water probably applies more force on equipment than most would believe. A guy in our club fishies Bass Opens and his bow Solix has been back twice in the last year, his garmin never. His garmin was on his last boat too. Weight could be a large part of that equation since he runs in very rough water that most of us wouldn't.

Heavier also can be a result of using older tech or as you say cheaper tech (cost not quality)

Running both HB and Garmin I'm always commenting on the weight difference between them

I have mounted a few units, what is the fixation on what they weigh? The only time I care is when I have to carry them around. I always use a strong mount, but more important to me is the backing I use under the mounting surface. The bow is the most stress on the mount as that is where the most pounding goes on. I doubt you can tell by the weight what the quality/value is unless it is made of gold. JMO Bob

All of that extra awesome in there is heavy. haha... I have my Solix hard mounted at the console (no arm) and have a ballzout on the Helix at the bow - no issues.

I have the heaviest of the heavy, an Apex 19, mounted at the Helm with a Balzout mount... Very Sturdy.

Yeah, I'm assuming the original poster was quoting the "shipping weight" which includes, two boxes, shipping materials, transducer, cables, mounting parts, and etc. Was definitely way off base.

His weights were off but the question is valid

When you hold a 10" Echomap in one hand and a 10" Solix in the other you can clearly notice a difference in weight
