hydra sport vl 270 transom replacement

I was given a boat and it has stress cracks right in front of the motor. i think the transom is rotted and there is a soft spot on the floor. so i think removing the cap is the best option. im new to boats so i wanted your guys opinion on how i should address these problems. thank you in advance.

There's lots of good helpful tips in this forum. Do a search and you'll find lots of guys have done the same. Maybe even a hydra sport at that. Welcome aboard!

My opinion: since you say you are new to boats, take it to a shop that does this kind of work and at least get an estimate of the cost and concept of how they would do it. You may be putting more into it that it is worth, perhaps why it was given to you. good luck, m

From what you are describing, removing the top cap it is possible the damage will be worse than what you can see at time of buying. I had a soft spot in my battery bilge area and soft transom. Total rebuild required removing top cap, new stringers and transom. With lumber costing double from last year you are looking at $2,000 in materials. Shop estimate to do these things and you at or about $6,000 to $7,000.

Where did you hear they didn’t have wood in the transom? I have an 89 DV200FF and have been curious about my transom.

When I was 21 I rebuilt a 16' bass boat. I had no clue what I was getting into. I had to ask how to do everything. Start to finish took me 6 months. A lot of that was coming up with money to buy materials, engine etc.
