    eagle 175 G3 50hp yamaha underpowered?

Going to look at a 2007 175 G3 with a 2012 Yamaha 50HP Four stroke. It appears that they were sold new with 50hp motors, anyone have any experience? Seems like a big boat for 50HP

I believe max power is 90hp, so you may not be happy with the 50.

My friend used to have a 17’ tin Skeeter with a 60 hp 2s Yamaha on it. It was an awesome boat for what it is. Terrific hole shot and ride. But then again it was a 60 and a much lighter motor than a 50 4s.

Way underpowered, I would want a 90hp at the minimum on that boat.

^ I had a 2001 with a 70 hp Yamaha and felt it was under powered.

It depends on where you intend to use it and how fast you want to go. I have the Cherokee listed below with a 40 Yamaha. It is just fine on medium bodies of water like 5000 acres and great on smallish lakes like 500-1000 acres or so. It gets on plane just fine and runs great. It will do 28-30 MPH. That's fine on small water and gets me there and back. I use the RT188 with the 115 on big water. I would imagine the G3 would be about the same. I think you might run about 30 or so. If this is not a problem where you fish then you will be fine.

I had one a long time ago. I think it was a 2003 or 2004. Two people it was fine. Three people it was tough to get up on plane. It was a solid boat but it did have wood decking.

Like previously mentioned it depends on the size of lakes you fish. I have the Eagle 175 with a 50 GP Yamaha. My biggest lake is around 900 acres. So I don’t need a ton of speed. With my 11 year old son and I it hops up just fine. Two adults, not too bad, three adults it really struggles, but that boat really isn’t meant to fish three adults comfortably either.

All in all I like the boat. I wish it had more power and a little more storage, but all in all it’s a solid boat!

If you can get it at a really good price i'd say get it. You can always sell the 50 and put that towards upgrading to a larger motor!

My first impulse is that this boat is way underpowered but I would want to know the weight of it and I don't find it on-line anywhere, and models have changed since then. The club I belong to has a couple of young lads (18 years old) that are fishing out of a new Tracker 170 Pro with a 50 hp Merc on the back. This boat is actually only 16' 8" and weighs 878 lbs. and I have to tell you that this boat will scoot along nicely and I am continually surprised with where I see the fishing as far as distance from the launch sites. Over the weekend I asked them how fast it would go with the two of them and they said 36-37 mph - pretty impressive.

That's really good. I've rented the same boat and motor combo in Spain and it would barely get over 30mph, but it was also just about impossible to trim up at all without causing porpoising, so I don't think they made any effort to get it set up properly.

Of course they may have exaggerated a bit, they are fishermen after all! But even low 30’s would be good.

It’ll fish. Speed questions around here are like walking into a bar and asking if drinking is unhealthy.

My first boat, after a canoe, was a 2004 G-3. Purchased new. Model Pro 175, ran that boat for 7 years. It came with a 50 HP Yamaha 4S. Thing would run 32 MPH all day long. Got up on plane pretty easy. No speed demon but ran just fine with a 50. It was rated for a 75 HP. The only times I felt "unsafe" was on larger bodies of water. Candlewood lake 5,000 acres on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, lots of pleasure boaters and wakeboats made for rough water. And when the wind kicked up a little on Lake Champlain.

Congratulations! Let us know what bodies of water you fish, I used to live in Indiana and fished club tournaments from a 14' Sea Nymph with a 25 hp Johnson so your rig is luxury compared that tin can I fished from.
