You sand with 800 grit, then 1000 grit then 1200 grit. Then you begin using compounds. Protec is a board sponsor. Products are excellent. Video is informational.

It's a labor of love. It takes a lot of time and there isn't much for shortcuts. You will get back what you put in. As a novice that has done a few different boats like that in my driveway, I'll say that you can get the smooth glossy finish back, and most of the glitter will sparkle, but usually the brilliant color that the flake had when it was brand new is gone forever. You just have to live with what you've got from my experience.

I am in the same boat (pun not intended) with my bass boat. This coming winter is going to be rough working on it since I need to replace the carpet as well.

I could use your advice as well. My Ranger has a poorly applied clear coat whic is coming off in flakes and looks terrible.

    thanks

That is automotive clear coat. The worst thing that can be done to gel coat. It might look good at the start but it does not bond properly to gel coat and will eventually do what yours is doing. You have a big job ahead of you. You must scrape off all that auto clear then start wetsanding the gel. Start with 1500 and work your way up to 2500 or even 3000.You don't need to "crank down" on the paper either and remember to use a soft foam sanding block or it will not sand evenly. Then start the compounding, polishing and final finishing. Good luck. It's going to be a lot of work
