    Tr 186/175 proxs setup?

My buddy has a 2013 model with a 175 proxs in it. I told him I’d help him get it setup right, but don’t have any experience with Tritons. He has a 6” plate, but is unsure what prop is on it. Says it runs mid 60s, but only turning around 5400 rpms......Without looking at it I’d imagine the LU is buried and needs to be raised up...

Any recommendations for prop and prop height?

23 or 24 tempest. Around 3” PTP. This should get you really close.

Is 70mph obtainable? I was figuring a blueprinted 26 Tempest would work on such a compact rig with that motor closer to 200hp than 175? I had 200sx skidder with a 200 xri back in the day that would run 70s. And that boat was much bigger.

but thanks for the advise. I’ll see if I can’t find a 24 Tempest for him and go from there. Something’s off for his rpms to be so low and the boat still perform as good as he says it does.

I would be surprised if you would get 70 mph. I have the Tr 18-6 with a 150. It’s a 59/60 mph boat. I would think you are looking at 65 mph.

I had one with a 150 as well and this sounds about right to me.

If he is not getting any chine walk in the mid 60s, then I doubt he has the motor to low. Mine started to walk in the upper 50s when I got it and I just kept moving it up till it went away. Just make sure you have at least 15 psi of water pressure while running wide open. I think at 24p would be the right prop.

I believe TR186 was discontinued after 2008. In 2013 Triton offered 18XS rated for 175 hp. 24P tempest plus or 23P fury 3 should get you in upper 60s.

I have a tr 186 with a Yamaha 175 hpdi with a 25 tempest. Fastest I got was 65-67. Motor is high but I think Yamaha likes to run higher then Mercury.

And it may be an 18xs. I know it’s an 18ish foot boat. Like I said, I know nothing about Tritons, but I do know they RUN when setup right. There’s a few around here that gives my Bullet all it wants. I have a big slow one per Bullet standards, but the toons can get it.

I’m gonna check how far below the pad he is, and see what prop is on it and go from there. He says it doesn’t walk at all. Well in my experience, he’s not fully on the pad.

That’s getting close to where I thought he could get. The 175 proxs should be stronger than the stock hpdi though.....I’m a non-stock old school efi Yamaha guy...... You get some HT goodies on your hpdi and your instantly in the 70s.......

If his boat is an 18xs instead of a 186 then it is bigger and likely heavier so he won’t see the same speed.

To the OP- I’ve got a 2008 18x2 so if he’s got an 18xs it’s really similar to my hull. I’ve also got a 175 proxs but no jackplate. It runs 62-64 and walks a bit but it’s easy to control with little jabs of the steering wheel. I run a 23p tempest for those speeds.
