Anyone not happy with the move to 4 stroke?

More specifically the Mercs? Just curious how many people did not like going to from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. I keep hearing guys elude to the fact that they may not be as fast. I know propping is different. Just trying to make all considerations on a new 721.

4 stroke is great. And I thought my new 2 stroke was quiet back in 2002 when I bought it. The 4 stroke is very smooth too. Not a Merc, but still a 4 stroke.

Dock talk consensus I've heard is the majority of people like them and are glad they have them vs the 2 stroke.
Propping is different, but it's also a problem for alot of hulls. Several I talked to have multiple props and they still can't get it "right". The boat will run decent, but not great

I am not opposed to 4 stroke as much as Mercs 4 stroke. I know the yamaha runs. I hear merc die hards say they are amazing but I hear a lot of quiet talk of performance lacking. Mainly top speed. Especially in relation to propping the boat.

This is what I am looking for. I am nervous that most of the people saying they are the greatest thing ever are the same people that say I don't care about running 78 vs 72 and they are fine with it.

I’ve not heard anything about top end being lower with the 4 stroke. I’m hearing it’s the same. I was an “early adopter” with the Merc V8 4S....I’ve had one since June of 2018, and it’s been great. Top end is the same as others are getting with the 2S on the same make/model.
I guess maybe there could be a top end difference on the “go fast” boats (Ally, Bullet, etc.)?
Obviously, there’s not a 2S option if you are buying new, as the industry has gone 100% 4S.

I raced dirtbikes around the time they switched from 2 to 4 strokes. The 4 strokes great but when they broke they broke bad and cost a ton. I just wonder how it will be when warranty is up and the 4 stroke needs repaired.

Yeah, I'm partially trying to convince myself to keep my boat. If I don't, I'm currently leaning towards the yamaha

I had both on the same boat and there was no difference in top end.

Had a 721 with a SHO (4S) and later (after an unfortunate incident with the SHO) put a ProXS (2S) on it. Both ran similar speeds, but I did a lot more playing with props to get the speed out of the ProXS. I'm running a Merc 4XS on my 921 now, wouldn't even consider going back to a 2 stroke. The 4XS is night and day quicker on the larger 921 from 0 to top speed (70-74 depending on conditions) than the ProXS was on the smaller, lighter, typically faster 721. I'm sure if I had raced those boats side-by-side it would have taken miles of straight and relatively smooth conditions for the slightly faster 721 (ProXS) to catch up to the 921 (4XS).

The 4XS 4.6L V-8 has 50%+ greater displacement than the 3.0L (if memory serves correct) V-6 ProXS. IMHO, I don't see a realistic situation (assuming similar efforts to prop, balance, etc.) on the water where a Phoenix 920/721/921 with a ProXS outruns the same boat with a 4XS.

What are your all around comparisons of SHO vs 4XS?

I'm running a 920 elite with the 4s and seeing 76 consistently and 78 sometimes with the Fury that came on it. I can run 74 with a Fury 4 blade. No problems playing around with props. It's quick and fast and outruns everything else in our club including 250 2s's, but we don't have anyone running bullets or allisons.

I am running a 919 that originally came with the 225 2 stroke. I switched to a 4 stroke and went from 78 to 76. I would take the 4 stroke Merc, I have about 250 trouble free hours. I only had one fault which was a shift sensor.

Why did you lose so much speed?

Couldn't be happier. Coming from a 2000 Merc EFI. Besides the obvious torque, no more 2 cycle oil and now I buy 87 octane instead of 91.

No complaints other than fuel usage I think. Hard to say since I came from a 20 foot Bullet w/250 2 stroke. My 921 is damn near twice as heavy and a lot bigger boat to push. Not a fair comparison for fuel usage. But it pushes my sled 74-76 depending on load. That's honestly faster than I thought it would be.

My 721 has seen 78 with the 4s merc loaded with one in cooler weather. Loaded with poles 3/4 fuel and fish in the livewell with two and tons of tackle I have ran 75.5. Fury 24 Don't see where to 2 stroke is any better imo.

What pitch fury 4? I want a 4 blade for big water. I have a 920 pro xp with a four stroke.
