Just saw a test on the new Charger 198 and it had a 23 fury 3 blade and ran 70.

    23 seems small. I run a 25 on my 2-stroke. I would’ve thought you could get the rpm’s needed out of a 24

From what my friends are running on the new merc 4 strokes they all are a few pitches smaller than the 2 strokes with same boat.

I had this argument with someone on FB, you need more rpms on the 4 stroke. More rpms is with a smaller pitch prop, you could use the same 25 on the 4 stroke, but you’re not going to get the 6k+ that’s needed.

Are you asking about props with 4stroke motors ? Or 2 stroke? Motor will make a difference. Each boat is an individual and may need different props even for same model hull and motor.

I’m putting a 4-stroke merc on a 198. Was wondering if anyone has done the swap and if they went with a fury or tempest. Thanks

When you have it done, can you let us know how the handling changed? I’m curious how the extra weight will affect the rig, I think it will help bow lift, might make steering squirrely though.

Yes, please do. Complete with prop pitch, top RPM, speed at that RPM and feel of the hole shot.

From what i have seen the Yamaha SHO turns a littler higher pitch prop than the Mer 4 stroke. Either way try the prop you are currently running to see where you are.

You’re running a flashed SHO, correct? How did your 196 feel different when you swapped to the SHO? At some point, most of us will be forced into the 4 strokes, it’d be great to know what to expect.

I wish i had and SHO ! My friends have switched from SHO to Merc 4 stroke on same boats and in general the Yamaha turns a slight higher pitch in these cases.

    I had a 2000 203 with a 2020 Mercury Pro XS 4 Stroke 250 and it ran well with a 25 tempest. So a 225 on a 198 would probably run a 23-24p
