300 Mercury Racing on VX 21

The decision is made and gonna rig a Mercury 300 Racing on the VX21 but need to know if a torquemaster or sportmaster lower unit will be the right decision. I have heard that sportmaster could be a bitter slow on any high end 21 footer.
Any idea to get the perfect decision?

Mercury board may be a better place to ask. I am not sure we have many VX owners on this board.

A Sport Master would be useless on that heavy boat! And if you run a 300R with a torque master, your not going to get very much more speed than if it were a regular 300 ProXS.

I would stick with a 300 ProXS and torque master for that boat.

I THINK THE SAME. a sport master is not the right lower unit for a bass boat.

It will work on a bass boat but not a heavy hulled boat.

Is the VX considered heavy at 1900 lbs? Seems similar to 90% of 20ft bass boats made these days.

Yes and 90% of them would not benefit by running a 300 Race motor.

The 300R with the Torque Master would be the better choice.
Your hole shot would remain the same as with the Merc 250, but mid range power would be noticeably quicker along with a faster top end.
Its all about what you want out of your rig.

IMO the 300 “Pro” XS/TM would be a better option due to the warranty. The small MPH you may gain with the 300R/TM....to me would not be worth the reduced warranty.

THIS ^^^^^ Big motors with sporty lu's on what would be considered a non-high performance hull is futile. To be honest I would just stick with a 250 w/TM lower for resale unless you plan to keep it forever. Difference in speed between the std. 250 & 300 pro xs isn't enough to justify the cost difference.
