Mariner 175hp - Stalling, thirsty for fuel - loss of pressure in primer bulb

    Serial: 0G360900

    96 Mariner - 175 HP 2.5 L - EFI

In the last month or so, my motor has stalled a number of times due to lack of fuel.

I go back and prime the primer bulb, and each time - it has lost all pressure. I can usually pump the bulb until it is firm again, start the motor up and continue on my way.

Is this indicative of the fuel pump going out?

    Thanks.

Might as well replace the bulb with a Mercury or Quicksilver bulb too.

^^^^ This. Replace ALL items, all at the same time. Don't substitute, piece-meal, or skimp... best way to solve the problems and motor on.

Hey guys, I need to update this thread.

Up to this point, I have rebuilt the fuel pump per the kit referenced above. and replaced all gas lines (from the motor to the tank) and OEM primer bulb (thank you Rhonda and Don). I also replaced the fuel water separator filter, and bypassed an additional filter that the original owner had installed (who knows when).

The motor is doing the same thing. I can prime the bulb...the motor will run for a few minutes (until the fuel is gone that was pumped in manually) then stall, and there is no pressure at the primer bulb.

At that point, I can manually prime it and run it until it burns that fuel....rinse and repeat.

So, it is doing the same thing as it was before - but before....sometimes it wouldn't stall completely....and would keep running...not anymore...now it just stalls.

Another thing...after I replaced all of the gas lines, when I was priming the bulb for the first time after installation, I could hear and feel air coming from somewhere behind the fuel water separator filter. I couldn't identify where it was coming from, and once the bulb got hard...you couldn't hear the air anymore...nor could I see any evidence of fuel leaking anywhere...like a cracked hose.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

I have had 2 hoses deteriorate / crack since I've owned the motor...so I suspect this could be the case here....but wouldn't there be evidence of fuel leaking somewhere?

    Another update:

I disassembled the fuel pump this morning and found the issue.

One of the plastic retaining clips for the check valves came loose and and the check valve was no longer installed correctly.

When I changed the fuel water separator last Friday, I even noticed the small retaining clip in the bottom of the filter and never really thought anything about it

This explains so much....it was running great last Sunday and then fell on its face at WOT. That is when the retaining clip let loose....the motor wouldn't start after that...because the retaining clip was lodged in the fuel lines. Once it made it passed the fuel lines and into the filter - it would start again, but not pump fuel correctly.

So I think I figured it out....but it makes me feel real dumb...

Took long enough! Crazy what that little clip did working it’s way though your fuel system. She sounds good now!

I was having a lot of the same symptoms as above, motor would run fine if I pumped the ball, but would fall flat after being shutoff for a few minutes unless I repumped the ball. I changed all hoses, primer bulb and rebuilt fuel pump and it has solved all the issues. Runs like a top.
