We have a Dyson hand held and it is the worst handheld we have ever owned. We don't even use it anymore.

Look at some of the actual reviews of Dyson’s on YouTube. Ones where the guys actually test with particle detectors and such. Miele is the best brand and actually emits zero or near zero particles. Dyson’s have horrible leakage and spew dust and allergens everywhere.

$350 dyson lasted 8 months.. warranty was a joke. If you want to take a stab at fixing it (red light of death) you can have it for free..just pay shipping). I'll never own a dyson product again. We replaced it with the LG, we have two of them now (one for here and one for the lake). It was like $500 but worth every cent as it does well on uneven floors etc. They sell it at costco..idk where she got it..i just pay the bill. https://www.costco.com/lg-cordzero-c...100432890.html
Miele makes the best canister out there. Many last 15-20 years if you don’t trash them. If you have carpet you need the 228 or 236 power head to do a good job. The bare floor brushes work better than the combo brush for bare floors. The Homecare models have a longer warranty and come with extra tools. I would stay away from Dysons and Sharks.
Cordless vacuums are good for bare floors and maybe a few throw rugs. Expect the vacs to last from 3-5 years before you need another battery. Sometimes the replacement batteries cost over half a new unit.
Check out The lightweight uprights from Riccar if you don’t need tools on board. They clean very good and weight in at 10 lbs. Good on pet hair.
Most people have both bare floors and carpet in their home. Generally the canisters work best on bare floors , and uprights work best on carpets. There really aren’t many vacs that do a great job on both types of floors. Figure out what is most important to clean the best and go from there. The very best option might be one of each style.

Have had a rainbow for nearly 20 years. There's nothing better.
We got a Dyson V 11 outsize when we moved into our new house earlier this year and that thing is the most impressive vacuum cleaner. It’s cordless but has power equivalent to a corded vacuum and it has interchangeable batteries so you never have to worry about running out of juice.
So correct, I recently had to try and find a belt for a carpet cleaner and being naturally chatty spoke with several nice owners at about 3 or 4 vacuum shops here which ended with them all saying they do not like the Dysons, or the other well known cannister brands even though several were Dyson and Shark repair shops. They all said while Bag less seems great they just allow to much small dust and particles to pass through. After they said that it made sense to me as I used to do drywall work and we would never run a shop vac without a high efficiency bag to catch all that dust.
Miele - ours is going on 12 years and still like new.
I like the Dyson and their cordless ones are nice also.

How do you like cleaning it after every use? That was a big deterrent when we were looking.
Take a look at the Filter Queen, very good unit, and still going strong after 38 years. Price back then was around $400 ..... Talk about inflation

I have seen DEMO's by several of the high dollar manufacturers. Rainbow, Yes, it cleans well but who wants to have to dump a bucket of water everytime they vac? Filter Queen Majestic. Yes I have one. 1300 bucks 25 yers ago. Seen a Demo for a Kirby, this is the only vac I ever seem actually lift the carpet as it went over it. Yes we have on of these also. The wife had it when we got married and it is also 25 years old or so. She upset a Rainbow demonstrator once. They alway put these little white cloths in the suction tube to show you what your vac is missing. Well this person did that and there was nothing but a few colored carpet fibers where they scrubbed real hard. The wife said SORRY, I just vaccumed today with my 20 year old Kirby.
My wife treats vacuum cleaners like she hates them. She would destroy one every three years. I would just get tired of fixing them and get a new one.
Until I tried a different approach. At work I ran into a commercial vacuum salesman doing a pitch to the manager who is in charge of house keeping. I asked if I could take part and I was sold.
I ended up buying a Sanitaire upright. It is made of Kevlar! She can shoot it and it will keep going. The funny thing, it is the same machine as the $1200 Electrolux but not as pretty. It was $500. 8 years later I have had no repairs or worn out parts. I suggest to go commercial quality.

We have a Shark Rocket. Great vac. Very light and easy to store. It cleans very well and we’ve had it for 10 yrs. I also have a wife that will destroy appliances. Hoover vacs didn’t last a year and blenders may last 6 months.
We have a Sebo. Overall it's been very good. Pros: compact, light weight, HEPA filtration, exhaust is baffled so it doesn't blow dust and hair everywhere, quiet (wife hates football so she often vacuums when I'm watching and I can still hear the game). Cons: it doesn't have the strongest suction on the market, the compact size means it has a small bag, the hose is off-centered so it's a little wonky when you pull on it and it doesn't go in a straight line.
They make a pet version that might have been a better choice for us.
We have a Shark Apex Duo-Clean. My wife liked it so much we bought another one for the lakehouse.

It replaced a Dyson Ball Animal (sold it). Dyson makes a decent, overpriced, middle-of-the-pack CR rated vacuum. We also have a Simplicity canister that’s decent, but doesn’t hold a candle to the Shark. All you have to do is look at the ratings to know paying more doesn’t guarantee performance or reliability.
The top rated cordless stick vacs are Tineco Pure.
