What to do with rust on trailer crossmembers

I have a Nitro 901 CDX and an original Nitro trailer and my crossmembers are rusting out on the bottom of them, but still appear to be sturdy. What are my options here? Grind and paint them? Cut them off and weld new ones on? Or... Thanks for the discussion.

As champ 2001 said, It's a product designed to be painted over rust.
We use it all the time up here in the rust belt for trailer frames, truck frames, etc.
It covers and stops the oxidation process.
It's designed to bond and cure with moisture, so no excessive prep work needed.
Just remove any large rust scale, and paint it on.

+1. I have used POR-15 for years on rusty jeep frames. Applied correctly it will stop rust from spreading. You can also paint over it

I had an older nitro trailer and had the very same issue. I never knew about this paint at the time and I couldn't find another trailer. I heard several said their trailers broke while towing and then I worried.
I cut out thick aluminum from a templete of the crossmembers and sandwiched the crossmembers using bolts. Sounds a bit crude and a lot of work but honestly came out very good and many were impressed and just saved thousands on a new trailer. As I gave up years ago trying to post pictures, I cant send any.
    Good luck.

I would use a wire wheel and remove as much as possible, then use a good primer and a rust inhibitor Marine paint.

I keep a gallon of this rust converter around and use a spray bottle for application. Truck undercarriage, tractor accessories, and anything else with steel corrosion.
