    Reel shopping

Hadn't bought a reel for a few years. Started looking on line. Those things got expensive.

lots of good reels to be had if you don’t have to keep up with the BBC naysayers . As stated above 100$ gets a descent reel. A buck and a half and your into some very smooth, long casting reels, with good drags and tight tolerances. Happy shopping. I’ll let the conglomerate talk brands. Most that know me already know what I throw.. slip some drag along your way sir, when you settle in on that choice

LOL, I'm old enough to remember when I hated to dish out $29.95 for an Ambassador 5000 to Snook fish with..

I’ve been using some of the $99 Lews reels lately and have been well pleased. I don’t have any of the 300-400 dollar reels but these are certainly good and equal to some of the Tatulas and Shimanos I have.

Shimano SLX for 99 is pretty much a steal. If you wanna get a little more Curado or Tatula. Depends on brand preference.

I have some $99 Lew's LFS that are getting close to 5 years old and they are in good condition. Over the last few years I have been replacing any reel I need the Lew's LFS.

I really like the Abu Garcia MGXtreme and the Shimano Metanium DC. Both are pricey but amazing reels.

I remember the $29.95 5000 also. That was a wad of money.
I have a load of old green and the later gray Shimano Curado's.
All are 100 series, boat rash free, and still smooth as silk.
Retail was $159.95 when new. They work for me. LDS

I am back on the Daiwa casting reel wagon. In the early 90's I was high on Team Daiwas, then was introduced in late 90's to the Curado greenies, then I had to start replacing them in the 2000's with next gen Curados. Shimano made some backward moves in ENG, and slowly but steadily got back to Daiwas...currently love the Tatulas you can get on clearance for $139 now.

I tend to not care about the latest-and-greatest, and I rebuild my reels every winter so they last years.

Without getting into the Tribalism of brands, each produces a equal reel in the price point. Pick your budget, pick the brand that makes your ears wiggle.

Yup, seems like around $100-$150 you can still get a quality reel that will last. I have a pile of 13 concept A's, C's, and last season pickup up 4 daiwa tatulas. Both brands are smooth but I am glad I paid a bit more for the 13's with their heavier drag than most

What kind of braking system are you used to? What kind of profile of reel? What are you gonna use it for? Budget? All important questions to help narrow the search....

Check out some of the deals to be had on here in the Reels for sale forum. I really like the Lews Super Duty. Good Luck with your search.

I'm using the Lew's LFS reels and for the price point find them very nice reels ,cast well and good drag ,smooth retrieve, I ended up with 4 of them after using my old 4600's for many years
