    Lithium batteries in cold weather

Now that the temperature is 29 degrees here, what again are the concerns about changing lithium batteries?

Lithium batteries don't like to be charged if the battery is below freezing. It will cause permanent capacity loss. Its not the air temperature but the actual temperature of the battery. If you have been out all day using the battery and then go right to charging you will probably be ok since using them causes them to produce their own heat. If you are concerned that they may be too cold you can scan them with an infrared scanner to make sure they are warm enough.

Cold lithium batteries can be used (discharged) in temps down to -40C (oddly, -40C is equal to -40F) and will perform normally. Again that's battery temperature, not the air temperature.

Some manufacturers(Battle Born) produce batteries that have internal heaters that can be used if you are in a cold environment. Some can supply heating pads that the batteries sit on or next to to keep them warm.

Relion batteries has a new line that can be charged at lower temperatures. Not sure what has changed in the design to allow it.

watch this and you will learn a lot about why they say not to charge lithium’s at a high rate below freezing. You can charge them below freezing but you just have to be mindful of the amount of current you are putting back into the battery and the temperature of the battery at that current.
