    2016 RT188 Spare Tire

How is the spare tire secured on a 2016 RT 188 trailer?

J bolt through a bracket welded on the trailer and through one of the lug nut holes and a lug nut. I also use a chain and padlock

Note that the nut on the bolt is usually a different size than your lug nut.

Good point if you need your spare and don't have a socket to fit the spare lug nut! Ask me how I know. Better prepared now! LOL

Just curious, what size is the nut on the J bolt holding the spare?

I am not sure if I changed my lug nut on the spare or not but it has a 13/16 on it now to match the others. For those who have never had the wheels off make sure you have a socket that works and you may need a large Phillips screwdriver to get the cap off. Impact sockets will not work on my rims needed a thinner socket.

Is the J-bolt home made or purchased (where)

I assumed it to be a 3/4 but was checking to be sure. This is the tool I put together to keep in my truck, the socket on the breaker bar is 13/16 but there is a 3/4 stored in the other end of the cheater pipe (under the red cover).
I have never used this on my trailer but have used it several times at the ramp helping other people.

The J looking bolt is factory and it slides through a small round piece of tube welded to the trailer.

I wonder if the rims on Ranger tin boats are still mounted by the 2000 lb. gorilla that torqued mine to a gazillion lbs. I liked to have never gotten those suckers loose and it was a common complaint the first two or three years of the RT series. Since they changed trailer suppliers I supposed this is no longer a problem.

My 2018 trailer was one of the first to be made by EZ-Loader. I took my torque wrench when I picked the trailer up at Flippin and checked the lugs after leaving the plant. They were all at 100 lbs.
However, about a month ago I helped a guy at the ramp that had a flat on a 2018 glass Ranger and it was all I could do to break the lugs loose even with the cheater pipe. It pays to check before you have a problem.

I received my j-hook and 13/16 lug not. It appears to carbon steel. I reckon I has expecting chrome since the new RT188 had a chrome lug nut holding the j-hook up. Thanks everyone for your inputs.
