1197 and 997 sharing one gps puck

Is it possible with these two units? Putting together a budget boat and want try and get away with using one antenna

Two ways, via the AS INTERLINK box or a GPS splitter cable ( don't remember what that is, but have used one), since the 997 doesn't have Ethernet.
Both discontinued a long time ago.

Actually still have it, but doesn't work anymore since it was loose on the deck and partially fell off and got dragged on the highway for many miles.

Got my cable in, and cannot for the life of me figure this out. I have the y cable splitter and the syslink cable, but I need either a male to female adapter or a y cable with 2 female ends instead of 2 male... do they make these?

    Using JUST the SYSLINK cable.
You connect the antenna to the plug that has the two cables on it.
Then you connect the other two plugs directly to each display's COMM port.

IF you are using INTERLINK, you don't use the SYSLINK cable at all, you plug the antenna in to the INTERLINK box.

I must have received the wrong cable and this isn't the sys link at all. This just has a y cable with a female on one end and two males on the other, and a 10 ft cable with a male on one end and a female on another

You must have gotten a AS YC cable and an INTERLINK cable. That combination may work the same as the SYSLINK cable.

The AS YC has different plugs, one has NMEA COMM and the other is ACCY COMM on them.

Plug the AS YC into one of the units, connect the GPS antenna to the ACCY plug and the 10' cable to the NMEA plug, then the 10' cable to the other unit. If that doesn't work swap the antenna and 10' cable connections to the Y cable.

Got the sys link cable hooked up and both units have GPS but only one unit at a time. If i want GPS on the front units, i have to turn off the console. Is that normal?

I don't recall not being able to use it on two units at the same time. I did it with a 1198c SI Combo and a 798c SI Combo.

I'm not sure what's going on but I still was only able to get one unit at a time working. Oh well I can live with that.

What I cant live with is both units getting horrible interference when using the trolling motor. Makes no sense. Perhaps I need a seperate battery for just electronics?

If you have your electronics connected to the TM batteries, that's a definite way to create interference. Even when wired the correct way you can still get interference.

Sorry, it sounded like you were using the TM battery when you said needed a separate battery.
