    Checking gear oil

    SN 2B718299
    2019 Mercury 115
    SS spitfire 15p
    5940 max RPM

Is loosening the vent plug and ensuring oil at the level of the vent plug the accurate way to check the level?

    thank you

Engine at level trim, gear lube should be "just to" the bottom of the vent hole opening (not spewing out).

Neat trick Don showed me years ago... Bend a bread sack tie and insert in hole to see if it's close.

The bread tie as Don stated is a great idea. I have used a zip lock nylon tie just for different applications such as checking transmissions, differentials, etc. on different vehicles through the years.

    A yellow one works great.

Be careful what we post, Mother Mercury will read this and those bread bag ties will magically turn into “Adjustable gear oil level indicators” and will sell for $12.00 each.
