    Popping noise from trim/tilt

I’m hearing a popping noise when trimming/tilting my 2002 40hp Mercury. Is does it more when going up but also makes the same noise when going down. Any thoughts/ideas?

My thoughts too. If the striker plates are gouged up, then replace them! Always keep your balls greased!

Agreed, but this model has only one ram.

Low fluid will make noise and pop as the air gets compressed. Most tilt/trim units are good for 10-15 years before seals etc wear out.
    Please release me,let me go.

Tilt tube seems well greased. I went check it again and when I put my hand on the trim motor, it feels like it’s coming from the motor. It still trims and the fluid was full and clean. The outside of the motor housing is pretty corroded so I’m guessing the motor is close to going out.
