Well texas, budget at $200. Ok. Here's what I would do... The average Carolina rig for is 7 ft, med heavy( leaning on the heavy side). The older falcon, castaway and all star Carolina rods were great. Full handles, could beat the crap out of them. I would try looking for an older falcon low rider or castaway Carolina rod. I'm sure guys on here can find some. If my budget was at 200$ instead of buying one rod, I'd get 2... When I was into Carolina rigging, I had as many as 4 rods rigged... If I had a choice between a new fancy 200$ Carolina rod, or 2 old moldy mark David falcon low rider Carolina rods from somebody's basement, I'd go with the mold. If you can find an old Tom Mann jr, all star Carolina rod, jeez... Slice of heaven...

One of my Carolina rods was a 7ft all star Carolina spinning rod. With a big saltwater reel. That was nice

Surprised so many people use a 7' rod for C Rig.. I used to, way too short. I use minimum 7'3" but 7'5" or 7'6" depending on brand works much better!

I use the Powell Max 765sbr . Like the longer rod for more distance and longer rod helps with taking up line on hook set it’s a med/hvy moderate action.

I'm throwing mine on a 7'3" XH Phenix Feather, though the same rod is also available in 7'7" if you want extra length. It's absolutely excellent for the task! Super light, well balanced, sensitive, handles C-rigs and other dragging presentations perfectly, and really versatile if you want to do other stuff with the same rod. I've got two of them and use the other as my primary frogging rod. It also would make a really nice flipping stick. Checks in at $169 for the 7'3" and $179 for the 7'7".

Don't let the power rating scare you off. Phenix rates their rods heavier than other companies, so this one will fish much closer to heavy than medium heavy. I've thrown football jigs down to a half oz and tossed frogs weighing less than a half ounce with this rod with no issues, and have thrown C-rigs up to an ounce + bait and terminal stuff without the first issue. I'd feel comfortable throwing anything from 3/8 to 1.5 oz on it without a second thought.

I agree, longer rod has its advantages, but I kinda look at the whole picture. 7 ft rod stores and travels well, I'm 5-9 so it's easier to use in regards to rigging up. I never had any issues catching up on the line for a hookset. Moves your bait a bit slower than a longer rod.
I did have a few older daiwa telescopic flipping rods that were just the right action for Carolina rigging. "S" models i think. They kinda were a bit tip heavy for rigging though.
If I couldn't find an old falcon or all star rigging rod, I'd go for that lizard dragger for 129$.

+1 here. I use a Kistler 8'10" heavy moderate for my C-rigs. With butt cap weight system, right at 9'. Longer casts, good hookset on long casts, and the moderate action helps keep them pegged. (They are no longer on the Kistler site, I think I bought the last 2)

Drew, would you buy the PF in the 7'7" if you had to do it over again?

I would not, I would get the 7’3” again. It’s the perfect length for me being able to cast it and set the hook but also to be able to drag baits without it being awkward. Even forgetting the awkward, I think a longer rod would end up messing me up either by moving the bait too much or by making me end my cast too soon, especially in deeper water where I often get bit close to the boat.

Dobyns rods are on sale a lot of places right now and will be on sale at TW soon for at least 30% off. I’d get a champion 744c or 804c

I use a dobyns champion 764. It has done really well for me. It also does well as a hollow swimbait rod, large topwater, smaller size flutter spoon, pitching small plastics and probably a few other things too.
