A friend of mine has a 2006 model and she loves it. Hers has around 130/140K miles and she's never complained about it....

We had a couple in the family when they were new. As long was he can accept it's a gutless wonder he should be ok. The H3 was essentially a beefed up Colorado or Canyon of that era. Look at those drivetrain histories for long term reliability data.

It will be my 16 year old sons first vehicle so it doesn’t have to have power just 4x4 for winter driving.

The inline 5 is a pretty good motor. Trans that was behind it in the trucks seemed to be good too. Could outrun it with a golf cart or so it seems but solid. Long as it hasn't been abused too terrible bad it should be fine and plenty slow enough for a teenager. If he's like a lot of other teenage boys he'll probably destroy it anyway and not trying to be mean by saying that.

He should be pleased as long as the electronically controlled AWD system works.

One of son's football teammates has one, he says it's never let him down. It was handed down from his mom, never gave any trouble. He also says his dad's golf cart is faster off the line....

It will be okay till he slips up and says "My dad gave me a hummer for my birthday" then he will never hear the end of it.

2 things i would check into.
    1- Is parts available
2- How much will them parts be.
Sometimes you can get a vehicle that parts are very hard to find and when you do find them the asking price is high!

Fishing buddy had one from about the same time period. I didn't care for it because I thought the visibility was poor and I hated backing it down the ramp at night. Might as well have a cargo van. Buddy had several mechanical issues that were addressed under warranty until it had tranny problems and they found some mud up in the undercarriage from when he pulled a 2WD pickup out of some mud in his back yard. They concluded that he had been mudding and that voided the drivetrain warranty. He was pizzed because (A) he's not the type to go mudding and (B) Taking a Hummer off the pavement voids the warranty??? Seriously? He traded it for an Expedition I think. Took a bath financially but was much happier.

It’s based off a Colorado. Should have zero issues getting parts.

I have a 2005 H2 I’m getting ready to sell I think. Was planning on keeping it but have new truck itch. I just put almost $8,000 into it so nothing wrong now at all. Biggest cost went towards new air suspension and redid the console cluster. Has like 109,000 miles.

The H3 was a rebodied Trailblazer. Same chassis/platform. Not bad. Gas mileage of the H3 was a bit worse than the Trailblazer for some reason (meaning I don't know what they did differently).

Because of the beefier frame and body plus much larger AT tires.

    JUNK!!

the inline motor can't get out its own way. Its so cramped in there if you drop something in between the seat or the door a baby's arm can't reach it. And the worse blind spots I've ever seen in a vehicle.
