Capsized Golden Ray cargo ship-Salvage has begun

Been in the news again because they have started the salvage operation. Amazing what they can do. Cutting the hull with a chain...4,000+ cars....Man what a waste.

They are cutting that thing up with a giant anchor chain drawn back and forth with winches, I found that interesting.

I wonder what could possibly be worth salvaging, maybe the steel.

4000 cars. Say they salvage the panels and frame and some other parts that can be rebuilt... 5k each? Thats 20 million dollars. Might be worth it.

My buddy is a professional fishing guide on St Simons and has been posting updates for the last couple of years since it ran aground. He said the public has to stay 200 yards away but watching and hearing that thing grind through the hull

The salvage is because they can't leave it where it is, not because anything has enough value to justify the expense.

Sure, the steel will be sold for scrap, but that won't cover near the salvage costs. Cars will all be scrapped, too. No real value to any of them.

That is SO cool. I would love to be part of the team that designed the equipment and process for that job. I bet someone witnessed or heard about an accident with a runaway anchor chain that lead to the idea. Given the cost of the equipment and engineering hours it is hard to imagine making a profit. I wonder too if the government is paying part of the bill to remove it.

Pretty sure it's not a anchor chain. It's a specialized chain for cutting. Been around a while.

My company's rope division was contacted about a year ago or so about some products and one option they were working on was to remove the cars from the ship first and they wanted a barrier netting to catch the plastic pieces from the cars when they started cutting. I worked a little bit with opinions and designs for the barrier.... This is a big, big project with a big price tag.
