If you can bump up slightly, i dont think you can go wrong with Shimano Expride, if you want to stay exactly under $200 i think id lean towards 2020 Megabass Levante

St Croix Avid would be my choice.

I’ll also add the Mudhole MHX color series rod is right up there, I can feel the ends of a wacky rig senko quiver when reeling it in with that rod

I just purchased two tatula rods from the tackle trap and for the money they are very sensitive. Got the 7 1 drop shot rod and I am super impressed.

$200 gets you into custom territory. I won’t pay over $100 for a regular sized rod that isn’t custom

The Tatulas are great rods, but the Phenix Feather gets my vote. Right smack dab in the middle of your price range, too!

Both the cork grip and the elite’s are very nice. Can’t go wrong with either.

Lot of great advice here. I'd lean towards looking for a used or a discounted expride? I have a couple and they are really amazing rods for their price point. I have a ton of high end rods and I really believe the expride's sensitivity is up there.....

I got the cork grip. Tackle trap said it was the same blank as the elite just without the silver paint and foam grips.

I also recently purchased the regular Tatula 7'1" ML dropshot rod and have been very pleased with it. I am not sure I could think of a better rod in that price range. I would assume the 7' M is a great rod also if that would be a better action for your son. But I find the 7'1" ML to have a great tip for casting finesse with a good backbone to boot.

I don't know about sensitivity compared to other rods, but I've been really pleased with a 7' medium Zodias the last few years. I have a lot of miles on it crappie and walleye fishing, and have done some ned rig too. It is plenty sensitive for doing that.
Exprides are dang nice too, but I don't think you're missing a whole lot going with a Zodias if you're staying under $200.

    For the money...

My two go to discontinued rods:

    1. Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'9" MLXF
    2. 13 Fishing Muse Gold 6'9" MLF

But both are like needles in haystacks to find though.
