    Pondering Re-powering

Trying to decide if I want to invest in a new 4 stroke or buy a newer model boat with a 2 stroke. Not sure I want to spend the cash to get a newer boat with the 4 stroke. Also not sure about investing that much money in a 14 year old boat.

I have been kicking this idea around also. My boat is an 05 Triton 18-6. Looks and everything operates like new. Always garage kept (climate controlled). Just can’t decide to re-power or buy newer or keep as is and no note.

Just stuck a 2020 4 stroke 200HP on a 23 year old hull. I fish for bass, I do not wipe what's left of my boat down after fishing. If the bass are in the trees I go in the trees, if they're shallow I go shallow. I don't like to scratch my hull but if it happens, so be it.

My concerns are these: I want to get back from where I go, I want to go relatively fast, and I want economy.

200 HP suzuki DF, 1997 Stratos 285, 19 foot 5 inch dual console.

I repowered my 2003 boat with a new four stroke. Not a moments regret. So happy to have warranty and new power. I love to fish and I don’t mind keeping up an old boat. The repower was a no brainer when my motor popped. The old motor was worth $2500 running. A reman powerhead was $5000. Bad investment. I sold the popped motor for half the value to someone that could work on them or use the parts. We were both happy. I have no interest in spending big dollars on a new boat. The motor itself was pricey enough. I plan to keep this hull until it decomposes. Best of luck on your choice.

When it's time on my 2014 phoenix (hopefully many more years) I'm slapping a new motor on it. #1 It's paid for. #2 It's in great shape. #3 Look at a 2021 and look at your current boat, there's really not many differences over the years. They basically put one or two little things in the new boat and it's the latest/greatest. If you like your hull performance and plan to keep the boat for at least a few years after repowering it's a no brainer to me.

I have a 2009 boat Champion and I repowered with a 250 proxs 4stroke in February and also put a 10in hydraulic jack plate I had a manual I don’t regret it at all the boat runs great .

When and if the time comes, my 2 stroke Yamaha VMax will get replaced with a 4 stroke that is compatible with my 2003 Stratos 185. Not sure what that is, but 4 stroke fur sure.

No question in my mind. When my Evinrude starts giving me problems I'm repowering my 2010 Ranger. (Mercury or Yamaha)

In 2016 I repowered my 2009 Skeeter 20i with a 250 SHO. Sure is nice not to have a boat/motor payment. After two back surgeries and two shoulder replacements I couldn't duplicate the ride and performance of the 20i. It's the best handling and riding boat I've owned.

My boat and trailer are in great shape but it is an out of production boat (Procraft 210). I think that is the main reason that I am hesitant to upgrade motors.

I did this a couple years ago. My 2004 Evinrude DFI was giving me fits. I was ready to just sell the boat as is and shop for a new one. The prices of new boats was just too much for me. At this time outboard motors were scarce. Mercury was coming out with the new 4-stroke and Yamaha motors were nowhere to be found. I found a new 200 HP Optimax Pro XS for sale and had it installed on my boat with a new jack plate. Last year I spent the winter doing renovations to my boat. I replaced the carpet, reupholstered the seats, had the gelcoat restored, installed a recessed TM pedal pan, new pedestals and bases and a new Lowrance Carbon on the bow. Now my boat is like brand new for me and I have about $20K in it. I had replaced the original trailer a few years back with a new aluminum trailer.

If your boat is paid for and you like it I don't see any reason to get a different one. Repower or rebuild what you have.

Probably mostly depends on if you bought a boat that serves your needs. If not then get out of it and get what you want. Then when that boat needs a new motor you can re-power it.

For reference I am having the 2 stroke on my boat rebuilt now. I expect many many years of use out of it.

I have an 05 Triton TR-186 and when my XR6 150 dies I plan on repowering. I've looked at the new boats but like stated above I just don't see that many improvements over the years to justify the cost of a new boat. I like my hull and layout of the boat so I'm just gonna replace the motor and maybe a couple gauges and use this boat until I die...lol

Opti sold in March 2018 before the bottom fell out for the 2 strokes and the 4.6L V8 went on July 2018. If you have a solid hull and it's what you want, repowering decision is pretty easy.
